Question@2x Hi Lisa,

My New Year’s resolution is to get healthier and drop a few pounds, but I honestly don’t know where to start. What do you suggest?

New Year, New Me
Answer@2x Hi New Year, New Me!

Now is the perfect time to establish healthy habits that will last the whole year (and beyond!). Sure, it can be overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. Here are five smart strategies to kick off a healthy New Year...

Plan

When it comes to eating right, staying on track is easier when you plan ahead. For starters, pick up a food journal to track your daily food intake. It’ll keep you accountable and help identify troublesome eating patterns. Here's a great pocket-sized option; you can also go the tech-savvy route with the MyFitnessPal app. For meal planning made simple, snag one of these magnetic meal calendars, and stick it to your fridge. Decide ahead of time what you'll be eating for the week, and jot down what you'll need on the built-in shopping list. Need a more hands-on weight-loss plan? Check out The Hungry Girl Diet!

Shop

Planning and grocery shopping go hand in hand! Use last year's Hungry Girl Supermarket List as a guess-free guide. Frozen veggies, lean protein, salad greens, and low-calorie sauces & condiments are my meal-time must-haves. And don’t forget snacks. (More on that below.) Stock up on these meal-prep timesavers to make things even easier. Here are a few more tips for grocery store success!

Snack

Snacks can make or break a diet. Personally, I find that munching on healthy snacks between meals keeps me from feeling famished and overdoing it at mealtime. That’s why I keep emergency snacks on hand: fresh fruit, cut veggies & salsa, light yogurt, jerky, certain snack bars, etc. Having smart snacks on hand will also keep you from snacking on junky stuff you encounter during your day. Check out my favorite finds here. And don’t miss our latest snack finds in each Monday's daily email. (You DO get the daily emails, right?)

Move

There's more to healthy habits than what you eat. Pair your smart-eating tactics with some calorie burning! It might be too cold for a walk outside, so give Housewalking a try! I love my Fitbit Flex… It’s so handy for tracking all my steps. Hate exercising? Get inspired with these 18 tips for exercise haters. Exercise idea of the day: Clean your house! (You know all those holiday decorations are waiting to be put away.)

Hydrate

Drinking plenty of water is vital to staying healthy, and it can even help you lose weight. Why? Because when we're dehydrated, we often think we're hungry and reach for food, when all we really need is some H2O. To keep hydration top of mind, invest in a refillable water bottle like this floral cutie or this rainbow one. And if you're bored with flat water, go for sparkling water like (my favorite) Perrier. Here are some more tips if you have trouble drinking enough water each day.
Cheers to a healthy and happy 2018!
