Hi Hungry Girl,

I added a small handful of banana chips to my lunch today, and I was shocked when I went online and saw how much fat is in those things! How can such a seemingly healthy food be so fattening? Are there any healthy banana chips?

Banana-Baffled Amber

Hi Banana-Baffled,

Crazy, isn't it?! Banana chips are what I call "food fakers," meaning they seem innocent and guilt-free yet are really loaded with fat and calories. Those chips may be made from bananas, but they're usually deep-fried in oil and sweetened with sugar. Half a cup has around 200 calories and 12 grams of fat! That's... BANANAS! A much better option? Freeze-dried banana bits! When fruit is freeze-dried, it's just zapped of all its moisture -- nothing is added. It's light and crispy and awesome. And an entire cup has only about 100 calories! A company called The Funky Monkey makes amazingly delicious freeze-dried fruit -- the Banana with Cinnamon flavor one is actually cinnamon-dusted! Just Tomatoes, Etc.! (another brand in the freeze-dried-fruit biz) has a version that's Just Bananas. (Literally, that's the product name!) And believe it or not, you can find freeze-dried banana snacks in the baby foods aisle -- check out Gerber Graduates Mini Fruits in Banana Strawberry. Gerber also has a product called Graduates Puffs -- a light, sweet, cereal-ish snack that comes in Banana. The Puffs have just 25 calories per half-cup. Nice! Any of these would be a much better way to add fruity crunch to your lunch. By the way, you can also find freeze-dried fruit in the produce and snack aisles of the supermarket. Places like Whole Foods tend to have LOTS of options. Just check the product's ingredient list to make sure it's freeze-dried fruit without anything else added. FYI, some other food fakers to watch out for? Smoothies (they can be loaded with sugary syrup!), granola (400+ calories per cup!), and vinaigrette dressing (not necessarily lower in fat and calories than creamy dressing!). Don't be fooled...
