Dear HG,

I love waffles, and the stats on some of the frozen versions aren't bad. But I never know what to add other than light butter and syrup. Got any ideas to make 'em more meal-like?

Waffling Wendy

Hi Wendy,

You're right -- there are so many waffles in the freezer aisle with impressive stats: Eggo Nutri-Grain Low Fat, Van's Lite, Kashi 7 Grain... Here are some great ways to turn those waffles into a full-on meal!

Break out the breakfast meat. Sausage is great -- stick to meatless or turkey varieties with reasonable stats, like the ones from MorningStar Farms or Jimmy Dean. If you're more of a bacon lover, add a slice of center-cut or turkey bacon. Oscar Mayer, Hormel, and Jennie-O make some of my favorites. You can even find products like Jimmy Dean Turkey Hearty Sausage Crumbles and Oscar Mayer Turkey Bacon Bits -- no crumbling or chopping necessary! All of these morning meats are GREAT paired with frozen waffles. Top it all off with sugar-free pancake syrup -- YUM! By the way, beware of lite pancake syrup -- a quarter-cup has about 100 calories, compared to the 30 calories or so in the same amount of the sugar-free stuff.

Feelin' fruity? Stir berries or chopped fruit into some low-sugar fruit preserves, and spoon it over your waffles. Then add a little powdered sugar (only 10 calories per teaspoon) to make it feel really special. This would be great paired with a container of fat-free vanilla Greek yogurt!

Spread the love... Light butter isn't your only option. The Laughing Cow Smooth Sensations Cream Cheese Spread comes in a bunch of 1/3 less fat flavors -- the Cinnamon Cream and Strawberries & Cream are especially good on waffles. Just 45 calories and 4g fat per wedge, plus a couple grams of protein. Love peanut butter? Go for reduced-fat PB -- around 95 calories and 6g fat per tablespoon, plus 4g protein to keep you satisfied. Hungry for more? Pair your waffle with an egg mug!

Happy breakfasting!

Hi Hungry Girl,

I love to snack, but I'm not satisfied by small portions, no matter how delicious the food. Got any suggestions?

Turn Up the Volume

Hi Turn Up the Volume,

I hear you... Who DOESN'T like their snack servings large and in charge? Here are a bunch of guilt-free snacks with super-generous portion sizes!

94% Fat-Free Popcorn - You can have about FIVE cups for around 100 calories (PointsPlus® value 3*). Popcorn has fiber, too. Many companies make this stuff, but my favorite is Jolly Time Healthy Pop -- if you can get your hands on the Caramel Apple flavor, DO IT. If not, look for kettle corn or butter options.

Little Crackers, Big Servings - First up, Crunchmaster Cheezy Crisps. You can have SIXTY of these little crisps for only 120 calories and 3g fat (PointsPlus® value 3*). I also really like FiberGourmet Thinables. They come in great flavors -- Wheat, Nacho, and Cheese -- and a 1-oz. serving has just 60 - 70 calories and 2.5 - 3.5g fat (PointsPlus® value 2*).

Freeze-Dried Fruit - Regular dried fruit is a small, often sugary, shriveled version of its former self. (Sad.) Freeze-dried fruit, on the other hand, is just zapped of all its moisture. It's CRUNCHY and delicious. You can have a cup or so for 100 calories. Not bad at all! My hands-down TOP pick is Funky Monkey. For a supermarket staple, hit the baby-food aisle for Gerber Graduates Mini Fruits. While you're there, check out Gerber Graduates Puffs -- snacks so light 'n airy, you could eat the whole 6-serving container for 150 calories. Click here for more freeze-dried-fruit info.

Anisi Honey Wafer Thins - There's a reason these were the secret find on the "Ginormous Food" episode of Hungry Girl -- they're HUGE! Each steering-wheel-sized treat (okay, maybe slightly smaller) features a crispy outside and a sweet layer of honey on the inside. Only 90 calories and half a gram of fat each (PointsPlus® value 3*). Worth ordering online, for sure!

Veggies - Baby carrots, broccoli florets, red pepper strips, sugar snap peas... All delicious, nutritious, and low enough in calories that you can enjoy a lot of 'em. Dip your veggies into your favorite light salad dressing or low-cal dip -- click here and here for a couple of recipes. And for a chip-like snack made from veggies, whip up this Baked Kale recipe!
