Hey Hungry Girl,

Please settle this debate... My friend says flavored water, coffee, and tea count toward your 8 cups of water a day. I say no way -- only pure water counts toward the recommended 64 ounces. Who's right?

Waterlogged Lindsay

Hi Lindsay,

There are lots of differing opinions from experts on this subject. (Even the "8 cups a day" recommendation is debatable, since many factors affect individual needs.) So I'm not sure anyone can tell you exactly who is right... I'll give you my personal take on it, though. When aiming for those 8 cups a day, I stick with plain water (or water with lemon). I'll occasionally have a calorie-free or low-calorie drink like Bai5, FRS Low Cal, or coffee with a no-calorie sweetener packet. But I have those in addition to my 64 oz. of plain/lemon water, because I don't find them as hydrating as the pure stuff.

When it comes to flavored waters and other sweetened drinks, EVEN the calorie-free ones, really pay attention to how they make you feel. Some people find that those leave them feeling hungry and craving more sweet stuff. If that's the case for you, consider limiting these or avoiding them altogether. You could also go for drinks that aren't sweetened at all, like plain iced tea and water that's flavored only with fruit essence. But again, my personal preference is not to count those toward my water intake.

If you find it hard to get in those 64 oz. per day, try having the water at room temp rather than ice cold. I find it's easier to guzzle this way. And get in the habit of having at least 8 oz. when you wake up and every time you eat a meal or snack. This can make the total amount feel less daunting!

Hey HG,

Once the weather gets cooler, I start shoveling comfort foods into my mouth. AHHHH! Any suggestions so I don't sabotage my diet?

Fall Fanatic

Hi Fanatic,

You are in luck. Guilt-free comfort food is an HG specialty. Here are some top supermarket picks, recipes, and more...

Freezer-Aisle Finds: These are great for comfort-food cravings because they provide portion control. But not every cozy meal in the freezer case is a good choice, so here are some of my top recommendations. The Baked Entrées line from Healthy Choice has something for everyone, from an Italian sausage meal to slow-roasted turkey. Kashi's Mayan Harvest Bake is possibly the MOST delicious frozen meal ever! That has 340 calories and 9g fat, plus 8g fiber and 9g protein (PointsPlus® value 9*). And Amy's Chili & Cornbread Whole Meal is soul food gone guilt-free… 340 calories and 6g fat, plus 10g fiber and 11g protein (PointsPlus® value 8*). Recipes: We have so many I couldn't possibly list them all, but check out these favorites here at Hungryland: Great Garlic Miracle Mashies, Turkey & Veggie Meatloaf Minis, Green Chile Mac 'n Cheese, and Hungry Chick 'n Dumpling Surprise! Edible Idols: There's a reason that so many comfort foods have reached Edible Idol status... People are obsessed with the stuff! Check 'em all out, from macaroni & cheese and waffles to grilled cheese and lasagna. These emails are packed with grocery-store finds AND recipes!

Lightening Up Family Favorites: With the upcoming holidays, traditional family recipes come into play... and those tend to be on the heavy side. Here's a handy guide full of ingredient swaps, so you can slim down the classics!
