Dear Hungry Girl,

I crave baked goods now and then, but I can't be trusted with an entire pan of brownies or muffins. What's the solution? Are there any single-serve, low-calorie options?

Eats-the-Pan Pam

Hi Pam,

Sounds like baked goods are your trigger foods, a.k.a. foods you CAN'T stop eating once you start. That's like me with chips and pretzels -- VERY dangerous. And portion control is KEY with trigger foods (either that, or avoid them altogether!). Check out some of my favorite market finds and single-serving recipes to keep you satisfied without having to face that HUGE pan of treats...

Soft & Chewy Snack Bars - Some bars work really well to squash a craving for muffins, soft cookies... even brownies. Plus, many of them are packed with fiber and protein, which means they'll help you feel full. Luna has a ton of flavors to choose from with about 180 calories each, like Caramel Nut Brownie and Blueberry Bliss. A recent discovery of mine is Corazonas Oatmeal Squares -- part chewy cookie, part dense snack bar. SO delicious!

No Pudge! Fat Free Fudge Brownie Mix - The No Pudge peeps are looking out for you. Sure, the stats for the mix are great, but the truly exciting thing is that there's a single-serving, guilt-free recipe right on the box! Just combine 2 tablespoons of the mix with 1 tablespoon of fat-free vanilla yogurt. Then stir until smooth, microwave for a minute, and tada! Pssst... I'm pretty sure this recipe would work with any brownie mix ;)

HG's Red Hot Apple Pie in a Mug - This apple-pie swap was featured in a recent episode of Hungry Girl. It's completely unique and perfect for one. No baking required!

Vitalicious VitaTops - The ULTIMATE portion-controlled swap for baked goods like muffins and brownies. These treats come individually wrapped and last for months in your freezer, which means you can't use the "but they'll go bad" excuse to inhale an entire box. Plus, with only 100 calories, loads of fiber, and an impressive portion size, you really can't beat the stats. There's a flavor for every craving, too -- Apple Crumb, Triple Chocolate Chunk, BananaChocoChip (!!!), and more.

HG's Mississippi Mug Pie - This fudgy, rich dessert is right up your alley. Single-serving and super-delicious!

Fiber One 90 Calorie Brownies
- These are exactly what they sound like -- high-fiber brownies with 90 calories each. They're individually wrapped and come in two really delicious flavors: Chocolate Fudge and Chocolate Peanut Butter. They're small, but they definitely satisfy a sweet tooth.

Well, there you have it. Happy chewing!!!

Hi HG,

I'm considering getting a membership to a store like Costco or BJ's. Do those places carry HG-friendly items? What can I stock up on at warehouse stores if I can't find all the specific stuff you recommend?

Warehouse Woes

Hi Warehouse Woes,

There are a lot of great products you can find at wholesale stores like Costco and BJ's. You just need to know what to look for...

HG Staples Seen on Costco Shelves - When it comes to stuff with a standard shelf life, stock up on things you know you'll use on a regular basis. At the HG HQ, we hit up Costco for packs of The Laughing Cow Light cheese wedges, cases of Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Breeze (the shelf-stable boxes), tubs of Fage Total 0%, chicken breasts, and Fuji apples (plus other fruit and veggies). Of course, every location and warehouse store is different, so set aside some time to browse around. (Just don't go there hungry... Have a snack first!)

Pantry Stuffers - You can save a LOT of money by stocking up on guilt-free basics -- anything with a long shelf life. Stuff like puffed cereal, old-fashioned oats, no-calorie sweetener packets, sugar-free drinks (like Vitaminwater Zero and zero-calorie varieties of SoBe Lifewater), and spices. Don't forget to get some heavy-duty foil for all those HG foil packs!

Freezer-Aisle Finds - Some Costco stores carry 100-calorie versions of our beloved Boca Original Vegan Meatless Burgers -- same product, just larger. And a jumbo pack of mixed veggies is a great freezer staple. Also look for lean turkey burger patties and light ice cream novelties.

The 411 on Oversized Snack Bags
- A lot of people are afraid to buy snacks in bulk because they're worried they'll eat too much. My advice is to break down the food into single-serving plastic baggies as soon as you get home; this way you're not tempted by a ginormous open bag. If you do this, you can stock up on things like baked chips, almonds, pistachios, and more.

There you have it! P.S. For all things supermarket related, definitely check out Hungry Girl Supermarket Survival: Aisle by Aisle, HG-Style! (In stores October 11th -- pre-order now!)
