Hey Hungry Girl,

Please settle this debate... My friend says flavored water, coffee, and tea count toward your 8 cups of water a day. I say no way -- only pure water counts toward the recommended 64 ounces. Who's right?

Hi Lindsay,

There are lots of differing opinions from experts on this subject. (Even the "8 cups a day" recommendation is debatable, since many factors affect individual needs.) So I'm not sure anyone can tell you exactly who is right... I'll give you my personal take on it, though. When aiming for those 8 cups a day, I stick with plain water (or water with lemon). I'll occasionally have a calorie-free or low-calorie drink like Bai5, FRS Low Cal, or coffee with a no-calorie sweetener packet. But I have those in addition to my 64 oz. of plain/lemon water, because I don't find them as hydrating as the pure stuff.

When it comes to flavored waters and other sweetened drinks, EVEN the calorie-free ones, really pay attention to how they make you feel. Some people find that those leave them feeling hungry and craving more sweet stuff. If that's the case for you, consider limiting these or avoiding them altogether. You could also go for drinks that aren't sweetened at all, like plain iced tea and water that's flavored only with fruit essence. But again, my personal preference is not to count those toward my water intake.

If you find it hard to get in those 64 oz. per day, try having the water at room temp rather than ice cold. I find it's easier to guzzle this way. And get in the habit of having at least 8 oz. when you wake up and every time you eat a meal or snack. This can make the total amount feel less daunting!
