Hey Hungry Girl,

I need to get more fiber in my diet. I know it's important, but I don't know how to do it! Can you give me some suggestions?

Seeking Fiber in Seattle

Hi Seeking Fiber,

Getting enough fiber is VERY important. It helps you feel fuller longer, and it's been linked to a slew of health benefits, like reduced risk of heart disease. The USDA recommends 25 grams of fiber for most adult women and 38 grams for most adult men. Here are some ideas (delicious ones!) to up your fiber intake...

Breakfast: If you're a cold-cereal person, look for high-fiber options like Fiber One. (The 80-calorie chocolate cereal is delicious and, of course, I love F1 Original!) I like to combine high-fiber cereal with some low-calorie puffed cereal for a HUGE portion size with lots of fiber. If you like hot cereal, make an HG growing oatmeal bowl with old-fashioned oats. Either way, for extra fiber (and deliciousness), top your b-fast with raspberries, one of the most fiber-dense foods in the world. If you don't like berries, other fruits (like apples and pears) add nice amounts of fiber too...

Lunch & Dinner: There are lots of great high-fiber recipes in the Hungry Girl arsenal. Like wraps and/or pizzas? Start with a high-fiber pita or tortilla. The HG Special Pizza is a personal favorite. If you love pasta, go for high-fiber options: whole-grain noodles or fortified white pasta. (Just watch those portion sizes!) This Spicy Chicken-Sausage Penne is GREAT. Veggie-loaded salads and stir-frys are fantastic, since vegetables are some of the best fiber sources out there.

Snacks: Fruits and vegetables are obvious picks. I LOVE Fuji apples. Check out these ideas for zazzling up cold veggies, and click here for ways to turn vegetables into snacky swaps. Also great are high-fiber snack bars like the kinds by Quest and Fiber One. And, of course, VitaTops are fiber-packed ALL-STARS.

Happy chewin'!

Hiya HG,

My boyfriend is a typical meat-and-potatoes guy. I'm watching my weight, and I'd like to cook stuff that'll make us both happy. What've you got?
