When it comes to Edible Idols, few make us scream quite like ice cream. It's basically the Beatles of the food world. Check out how we idolize ice cream at the HG HQ...

  Greatest Hits

All Around Best: Dreyer's/Edy's Slow Churned Light

1/2 cup: 90 - 130 calories, 2 - 5g fat, 30 - 75mg sodium, 14 - 22g carbs, 0 - 1g fiber, 11 - 16g sugars, 2 - 3g protein -- PointsPlus® value 2 - 4*

When it comes to flavor variety (from Caramel Delight to Triple Chocolate Peanut Butter Sundae), amazing taste, and incredible texture, this lineup CANNOT be beat. It's also a supermarket staple, whether you're on the east or west side of the States. Heads up: The packaging recently changed, but the same guilt-free deliciousness is inside!

Recipe-Ingredient All-Star: Breyers Fat Free
1/2 cup: 90 calories, 0g fat, 40 - 50mg sodium, 20 - 22g carbs, 3 - 4g fiber, 13g sugars, 3g protein -- PointsPlus® value 2*

This is our choice for basic chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry, ESPECIALLY when we're planning to doll up our ice cream with decadent toppings or use it in a recipe. Why? Because calories and fat add up quickly when it comes to sundaes, shakes, and the like, and a guilt-free base is essential to keeping the overall numbers down. And (of course) this stuff is delicious; it wouldn't make our list if it weren't!

Weapon of Mass Consumption: Arctic Zero
1/2 cup: 37 calories, 0g fat, 80mg sodium, 6g carbs, 2g fiber, 5g sugars, 3.4g protein -- PointsPlus® value 1*

Sometimes all you want to do is sit down with a pint of ice cream and eat until your spoon hits the bottom. For those days, there's Arctic Zero. You can eat a whole pint for -- no joke -- around 150 calories. YES. It's true. It's not technically ice cream, but it is a scoopable frozen dessert that your taste buds will thoroughly enjoy. Heads up: This stuff does contain whey protein, a dairy derivative. (Older packages were recently recalled due to an undeclared milk allergen.)

The Cover Band: Cool Whip Free!

Frozen Cool Whip Free is a GREAT swap for ice cream... It's creamy and sweet and has only 15 calories per 2-tbsp. serving. We love it in faux ice cream sandwiches (click here and here) and floats (just add a 1/2-cup scoop to your diet soda of choice). As a recipe ingredient, it makes a big impact on the overall taste... but not on the overall stats!

  Ice Cream Serving Shocker!

A serving of ice cream as ID'd on nutrition panels is typically just half a cup. We ran a test at the HG HQ to see how many of us could accurately scoop a 1/2-cup serving of ice cream and, on average, we over-scooped by 20 percent. (And we're a pretty serving-savvy bunch!) This is valuable info, people! Avoid over-serving yourself with single-serving ice cream containers, like the ones by Skinny Cow and Dreyer's/Edy's!

  Peak Performances!

Sandwiches
- Who doesn't love a good handheld ice cream treat? If you crave a sweet sandwich right out of the box, look for ones with about 150 calories and 3g fat or less each. We especially LOVE Blue Bunny's Birthday Party Ice Cream Sandwiches and all of the offerings from Weight Watchers and Skinny Cow. Wanna DIY? Click here and here for a couple of HG creations!

Sundaes - When it comes to sundaes, do NOT trust the ones you get at ice cream shops! You're much better off making them at home with your own ingredients. Here's one in a chocolate-lined waffle-cone bowl, here's a crazy choco-rific recipe, and here are THREE classic sundaes to round out the pack. If you want premade and portion-controlled options, check out the sundae selections by Weight Watchers Smart Ones!

Shakes - We're not always into drinking our calories, but every now and then, milkshakes are a must! Restaurant versions are almost always COMPLETELY out of control in the calorie and fat departments, so we say DIY! Get down with this chocolate shake, this banana one, this b-day cake shake, and this PB shake! Or try the just-add-milk shakes by Skinny Cow. (The stats aren't bad!)

Think Outside the Bowl: Kooky Collaborations

In Sundae-Inspired Pies and Cupcakes - These are easier to make than you think! Here's a Banana Split Pie that's totally user friendly, and you'll earn cheers of applause if you bust out a batch of these Mini Ice Cream Cakes.

In a Fruity Vehicle and with Hot Fruit - Sure, berries are an obvious ice cream topping. Why not be a little different and scoop some vanilla into half a cantaloupe? You don't even need a bowl! Or get all hot 'n cold, and grill pineapple to go with your ice cream... Shown here with fro yo, but you get the idea!

Balled Up - That's right. Roll that ice cream into a ball, and cover it in sweet crunchy stuff! WACKY, maybe, but it's a neat li'l treat if you want something different and fun!

  Hungry for More? ENCORE!

Big Beautiful Baked Alaska
- All the retro flair without the retro calories! This recipe isn't going out of style anytime soon...

Lava Smash - That's right, a cocktail with ICE CREAM. This one has the added bonus of making you feel like you're on a tropical vacation...

Frosted Peachy Pinwheels a la Mode
- You bring the ice cream. We'll bring the pinwheels!

It's ICE CREAM, people. It's not like we're suggesting you pass along a scary chain letter -- just click "Send to a Friend" to pass them this freezy-licious fun.
