Corazonas Oatmeal Squares - If you want to snack while showing your heart some love, check out these big, oaty, DELICIOUS squares. They're like the love children of chewy cookies and dense snack bars, and the flavor options are GREAT -- Banana Walnut, Chocolate Brownie & Almonds, Chocolate Chip, Cranberry Flax, and Peanut Butter. Each square has 180 - 190 calories, 4.5 - 7g fat, 105 - 120mg sodium, 27 - 28g carbs, 5 - 6g fiber, 11 - 14g sugars, and 6g protein (PointsPlus® value 4 - 5*). Click to find or buy online!

Dreyer's/Edy's Slow Churned Light Ice Cream Triple Sundae Flavors - What's better than ice cream? Doy, guilt-free ice cream. But what's better than THAT? Three delicious, guilt-free ice cream flavors packed into one carton, Neapolitan-style! In Triple Chocolate Peanut Butter Sundae and Triple Cookie Fudge Sundae, a 1/2-cup serving has only 110 - 120 calories, 4g fat, 40 - 45mg sodium, 16 - 17g carbs, 0 - 1g fiber, 13g sugars, and 3g protein (PointsPlus® value 3*). Three cheers! Heads up: Don't confuse these Slow Churned types with the nearly identical yet higher-calorie Fun Flavors versions.

Oscar Mayer Sandwich Combos - Walking past the bazillion varieties of Lunchables in the market can make adults long for cute pre-packed lunches full of things that make them happy. Well, here you go! It's as if someone took a bunch of HG favorites -- like sandwiches with flat rolls, Jell-O Mousse Temptations, and 100-calorie packs -- and put them together just for us! In turkey/cheddar, ham/Swiss, and Southwestern chicken varieties, each carton has 370 - 390 calories, 13 - 14g fat, 880 - 980mg sodium, 42 - 53g carbs, 4 - 6g fiber, 5 - 9g sugars, and 19 - 21g protein (PointsPlus® value 10 - 11*). Oscar, we owe you one...

Fast-Food Frenzy: Finds and Fakers!

FIND: McDonald's Asian Salad - Back by popular demand! (Oh good, they got our emails.) This grilled-chicken-topped salad includes edamame, snow peas, mandarin oranges, almonds, and our favorite dressing, Newman's Own Lighten Up! Low Fat Sesame Ginger. It clocks in with about 360 calories (240 sans chicken). Available through early September!

FAKERS: Arby's Grilled Chicken and Pecan Salad Wrap and Sandwich - Boooo! These light-looking items (which remind us of Subway's truly light Orchard Chicken Salad sub) are bad news; the wrap packs in 630 calories and 41g fat. Think that's bad? The sandwich version has 840 calories and 44g fat. EPIC FAIL.

FINDS: Bruegger's Skinny Bagels and Under 500 Calories Menu - This is what we call doing it right. Each Skinny Bagel has 100 fewer calories than a standard bagel, and you can order ANY bagel "skinny." How is it possible? The bagel chain uses a special knife to slice away about one-third of the center of a regular bagel. Brilliant. There's a full lineup of Skinny breakfast and lunch sandwiches on the already awesome Under 500 Calories Menu. Smart stuff!

Schools and Childhood Obesity -- How Far Is Too Far?

A 2010 survey from Trust for America's Health found that 84 percent of parents believe their child is at a healthy weight, even though almost one-third of kids are actually overweight or obese. We're all about getting kids healthy, but check out some of the extreme measures some schools are taking to combat childhood obesity. One elementary school in San Antonio, TX, is going all Big Brother on lunchtime -- high-tech cameras photograph what the kids heap onto their lunch trays, and schmancy software calculates the calorie counts and nutritional values. The info is then reported to parents (who, thankfully, must give consent in the first place). Whoa! And just when you thought that getting your report card was stressful enough, some schools have started printing students' BMIs (body mass index) along with their grades. While the intent is to keep parents informed and aware, many are concerned about unnecessarily stigmatizing the kids. Hmmm... And this last story has less to do with health and nutrition and more to do with complete wackiness. Administrators at a school in Harrisburg, PA, revoked hot meal privileges due to lack of appreciation. (WHAT?!) Cold sandwiches were served instead, as punishment for bad behavior and not cleaning up after themselves. We're just wondering how they got characters from Charles Dickens novels off the pages and into that Pennsylvania school. (Kidding! Kind of...)

The Buzz...

We love portion-controlled choices... even when it comes to exercise! Take a gander at these My Trainer Fitness 100-Calorie Workouts from our pal MizFit -- you get a pack of 6 cards, and each card lists a series of exercises that can be done in about 20 minutes and will burn off (you guessed it!) 100 calories. FUN!!! Order now through Memorial Day, and you can get a FREE pack; just enter Hungry Girl and the name of the extra workout pack you'd like in the "Where did you hear about us?" section of the checkout page. (Expires 5/31/11.) Other workout options include At Work, Outdoors, for Guys at the Gym, and for Kids. Cool! ***Some mad food-scientists over at Caravan Ingredients have developed a product that can help bakers produce low-calorie English muffins -- about 85 calories a pop. Interesting... How about an 85-calorie bagel, Caravan? ***Want to get a head start on smart summer eating? Grab a copy of the June issue of Redbook (on stands now; the one with Shania Twain on the cover), featuring ice-cream-shop picks and tips from yours truly... HG! ***Eating less food could be as simple as cutting it into smaller pieces, a new study suggests. Some adults were given 20 pieces of candy; others received the same 20 pieces cut in half (so 40 half-sized pieces). The people who got whole candies consumed about 60 more calories' worth of candy than the others. Now if you'll excuse us, we've got to go cut a sandwich into about 40 pieces before lunchtime... ***If you like to follow recipes straight from your iPad, you may want to invest in this item. The Chef Sleeve is a resealable, clear plastic covering designed to protect your technology against all things gooey, powdery, liquid-y, etc. As fairly messy cooks, we think this is brilliant. ***It's your last chance (for now!) to see Hungry Girl on Food Network! The sneak peek continues this Sunday, 5/29, with "Surprises, Shockers & Swaps!" Tune in to Food Network at 10am/9c to see Lisa make low-calorie chip swaps, lightened-up granola, and much, MUCH more! Pssst... Feel free to beg the folks at FN (or ask politely) to keep airing Hungry Girl on the network by clicking here. And that's all we've got. HG out!
