La Tortilla Factory Smart & Delicious Whole Grain Fiber & Flax Corn Tortillas - When we chew carby foods, we want them to be low in calories AND high in fiber. Bonus points if they're low in sodium and come in more than one variety. (Yeah, we're kinda demanding.) This new line from La Tortilla Factory lives up to our lofty standards. In Multigrain, Yellow Corn, and White Corn, each 2-tortilla serving has 90 calories, 1.5g fat, 15mg sodium, 21g carbs, 5g fiber, 3g sugars, and 2g protein (PointsPlus® value 2*). They're rolling out now, so look for them where other La Tortilla items are sold.

Dreyer's/Edy's Slow Churned Light Ice Cream Limited-Edition Flavors - Sweet summer varieties! Just thinking about Coconut Pineapple and Black Raspberry light ice creams has us feeling all vacation-y. A 1/2-cup serving has 100 - 110 calories, 3 - 4g fat, 40 - 45mg sodium, 16 - 17g carbs, 0g fiber, 11 - 13g sugars, and 2 - 3g protein (PointsPlus® value 3*). They're only here until August, so stock up and chill out!

Clif Crunch Granola Bars - Like your granola bars flat, crispy, and packed in twos? Here's a whole lineup for ya, from the protein-bar gurus at Clif. Choose from standard granola-bar flavors (like Peanut Butter and Honey Oat) as well as decadent and unique options (like White Chocolate Macadamia Nut and the brand-new Blueberry Crisp). Each 2-bar serving has 180 - 190 calories, 7 - 9g fat, 100 - 115mg sodium, 24 - 27g carbs, 3g fiber, 10 - 11g sugars, and 4 - 5g protein (PointsPlus® value 5*). CHOMP!

The Chains They Are A-Changin'...

Everything's coming up HG these days -- even donut shops and diner chains are giving themselves better-for-you makeovers! Check it out...

Krispy Kreme - Yup, the establishment best known for donut-carting conveyor belts gliding under icing waterfalls is reportedly adding healthier items to the menu. Oatmeal, yogurt, and fruit juice are all on deck, as are new coffee drinks. Krispy K, if you can deliver glazed-donut-flavored oatmeal bowls and coffee drinks with low calorie counts, we'll be yours forever...

Denny's - Now that "Baconalia" is over (if you don't know, don't ask), the chain has swung in the other direction and bulked up its under-550-calories Fit Fare menu. New additions include the Harvest Oatmeal Breakfast (530 calories with sides of turkey bacon and fruit), a Chicken Avocado Sandwich (520 calories with a side of veggies), and the Fit Slam (an egg white 'n veggie scramble with turkey bacon, an English muffin, and fruit for 390 calories). Kudos, big D!

Freshens - The yogurt shop frequently found in airports and on college campuses is undergoing a major overhaul. The chain's 25-year-old, original-recipe yogurt base is being replaced with a mixture that contains... stevia! The yogurt will now have 25 percent fewer calories than before, which means ALL yogurt-based menu items will be lower in calories. WOW!

The World's Most Popular Food: Survey Says... PASTA!

A recent survey by the charitable organization Oxfam revealed that pasta is the world's favorite food. Since we love pasta as much as the next human, we want to take a moment to call out some great guilt-free noodle-y finds... Our pal Annie Chun has a new line called FreshPak Noodles -- these refrigerated sauce-free noodles come in Buckwheat Soba, Chow Mein, and Japanese-Style Udon, and each serving is individually packed. Annie's also got ready-to-eat, saucy versions in Noodle Express packs. (There are two servings in a tray, but with 160 - 200 calories per serving, it wouldn't be a tragedy if you ate both as a meal.) And some lucky individuals have already seen this in stores, but for the rest of you... House Foods Tofu Shirataki MACARONI SHAPED Noodle Substitute is rolling out across the USA! We've tried it, and we LOVE IT. So good in a creamy cheese sauce... like any good macaroni noodle! For more noodle-related fun, check out the "Pasta la Vista!" episode page on the Hungry Girl show site.

The Buzz...

PEOPLE! Have you been enjoying the Hungry Girl episodes airing Sunday mornings on Food Network? We're guessing you have, since the FN folks have extended the "sneak peek" yet again! For the month of July, you can continue to catch Hungry Girl on Food Network every Sunday at 10am/9c! It's really more than a peek at this point... ***Speaking of Food Network, our homey Emeril Lagasse (okay, fine, we don't know him... yet) will be answering your grilling questions live on Facebook this Wednesday (6/29) from 3 to 4pm ET. Just in time for those July 4th BBQs -- way to go, Em! ***This next story has us intrigued but also slightly confused. An engineering student in London has dreamt up a system called NutriSmart, which identifies foods by imbedded radio frequency tags and tells you how many calories they contain. You win, engineer guy -- our minds are blown. ***Here's a slightly less practical innovation... but one that's way more fun. For the consumer who wishes everything were more like candy, ESI has launched a line of Jelly Belly smart-phone cases that smell like jelly beans! There are also Jelly Belly-branded earbuds shaped like the candy pieces. Sounds good! ***In the U.S., we had the Food Pyramid, and now we have MyPlate... but what guides do they have in other countries? Click here for a quick world tour of graphic displays for dietary recommendations -- we're not-so-secretly jealous of that Japanese Food Guide Spinning Top... And that's all we've got. HG out!
