Lab Trip! Restaurant Nutritionals Are Put to the Test...

Occasionally we'll hear about a food item from a chain restaurant that's sent to a lab for nutritional analysis, only to find out that it has way more calories and fat than claimed. But typically, only one item from one location is tested -- with so many factors affecting the stats, the results could be inconclusive. Well, according to research recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, 269 dishes from 42 popular chains were sent to the lab for nutritional evaluation. Here are the top three most interesting finds, in our hungry... er, humble opinion...

1. Fast-food calorie counts tended to be more accurate than those for sit-down-restaurant meals. Good news for drive-thru chewers!

2. More than HALF of the dishes tested came in UNDER their reported caloric content. Perhaps companies wanted to be prepared for scrutiny...

3. After testing On the Border Mexican Grill and Cantina's chips and salsa FOUR times, the actual calorie count came to an average of 1,000 calories MORE than the 430-calorie claim. ACK!!!
