When Adults Get Smart, Kids' Choices Get Smarter!

It's an age-old dilemma -- how do you get kids to choose nutritious foods on their own? The secret may be sneaky marketing. has a bunch of ideas backed up by a series of studies. For instance, playing the name game appears to be a good move. When ordinary carrots were packaged as "X-Ray Vision Carrots" (nutrients in carrots are good for eyesight), preschoolers ate nearly double the amount of the orange veggies than they did when given unmarked carrots. Location is also key. In one school, placing fruit by the cash registers, where impulse purchases are often made, led to kids choosing fruit more often. In another example of the power of placement, simply moving a portable salad bar from the side of the lunchroom to the middle resulted in an immediate increase in salad sales. Finally, there's presentation. In one case, just putting fruit in a colorful bowl and prominently displaying it in the cafeteria increased the sale of fruit by 104 percent. These are easy and inexpensive changes that we would LOVE to see in more lunchrooms and cafeteria settings. Check out the Smarter Lunchroom Movement's Facebook page for more info!

Foods of the Future: Produce Edition!

Scientists and innovators are experimenting to take your fruit and veggies to the next level. Look what those crazy geniuses have come up with...

It's a Tree, It's a Vegetable, It's... SUPER-BROCCOLI!
All broccoli contains a key phytonutrient that has been credited for its link to lower rates of heart disease and some forms of cancer. However, a new variety called Beneforté has been developed, and it contains two to three times more of the beneficial component than regular broccoli! It's currently available in the UK -- we want some too!

Clean Eating! This product is SUCH a good idea that we can't wait for it to hit the market. These are fruit labels (i.e., those annoying, hard-to-peel-off produce stickers) that TURN TO SOAP under water. The soap is food-safe and helps to get rid of waxes, pesticides, and any other stuff you wouldn't want to eat. Brilliant!

Slide Over, Stevia...
There's a new natural sweetener sweeping the food world -- monk fruit concentrate! Antioxidants in the fruit are sweet yet calorie-free, so a New Zealand company called BioVittoria developed the new sweetener. It's already being used in some products we love, like these frozen treats from So Delicious!

The Buzz...

This is the LAST WEEK to vote for which flavor you want added to the Extra Dessert Delights line of gum. We tried samples of the potential new varieties (Root Beer Float, Bananas Foster, and Lemon Square), and our favorite is... Lemon Square! Root Beer Float is currently in the lead, so act now and cast your vote! (Ends 11/12/11.) ***More good news in the world of sweets! (We're still sugar-buzzing from Halloween.) Panda Licorice has a new flavor... and it's BLUEBERRY! Eat 15 pieces for only 130 fat-free calories -- YUM! ***Already thinking about what's to come in 2012? You're not alone. Consulting firms are predicting the big trends in restaurant food for next year: Thai and Indian flavors are on the list, as well as Korean-style foods. On the more obscure side, a Taiwanese shaved dessert called "snow ice" could be on the rise, in addition to savory-flavored ice creams. More health-conscious menu items are also in the cards. Neat! ***The next stop on the Hungry Girl Supermarket Survival tour is... Los Angeles! Stop by the book-signing event THIS Thursday (11/10) at the Barnes & Noble at The Grove for free snacks, Q&A, and (duh) Lisa's autograph in your book. The fun starts at 7 p.m. Click for more tour info. You can also catch Lisa on an all-new episode of Hungry Girl airing this Sunday on Food Network... "Girls' Night!" Click here for a preview! And that's all we've got. HG out!
