Spotted on Shelves...

Nature Valley Protein Chewy Bars - The company best known for crunchy granola bars has added treats with a protein boost to its chewy-bar lineup. The brand-new bars come in two flavors -- Peanut Butter Dark Chocolate and Peanut, Almond & Dark Chocolate. Both are tasty and neither has the unappealing (read: chalky) texture of a conventional protein bar. Each bar has 190 calories, 12g fat, 170 - 180mg sodium, 14g carbs, 5g fiber, 6g sugars, and 10g protein (PointsPlus® value 5*). They're hitting shelves this month, so keep your eyes on the market aisles.

Simpli Gluten Free Instant Oatmeal - Our gluten-related knowledge is always expanding, and we were bummed to learn that some oatmeals out there might NOT be safe for gluten avoiders. Luckily, these instant o-meal packets ARE. In Plain, Apricot, and Raspberry, each packet has 150 - 170 calories, 2.5g fat, 140 - 240mg sodium, 27 - 31g carbs, 4g fiber, 0 - 10g sugars, and 5 - 6g protein (PointsPlus® value 4*). Click here to track some down.

Dreyer's/Edy's Fun Flavors Apple Pie Snack Size Cup
- Even though this spoonable frozen treat isn't "light," per se, it's pretty reasonable in the stats department... and it's portion-controlled! And there are actual pieces of pie crust and apple inside. Each container has 190 calories, 6g fat, 90mg sodium, 31g carbs, 0g fiber, 22g sugars, and 2g protein (PointsPlus® value 5*). Perfect if you're craving apple pie a la mode; no slicing or scooping required.

New No-Guilt Menu Items for the New Year!

Restaurant chains are well aware of your (and everyone else's) New Year's resolution to eat right in 2012. And luckily, many are here to help. Applebee's has added new dishes to its Under 550 Calories menu. Try Roasted Garlic Sirloin (with herbed potatoes and -- WOW -- a grilled portabella cap filled with creamed spinach), Sizzling Chili Lime Chicken (with spicy sauce, Asian-style veggies, and rice), and Sizzling Asian Shrimp & Broccoli (over rice with a sweet 'n spicy sauce). Eatin' good indeed. And for a limited time only, participating Panda Express locations are dishing out Firecracker Chicken Breast (with bell peppers, onions, and a zesty sauce) for only 240 calories a serving. Not to be left out, Starbucks is launching some new items (as always). Most exciting: the Chicken Sausage Breakfast Wrap and the Peach Raspberry Yogurt Parfait, each with 300 calories. Look for these in SB locations starting tomorrow, January 10th. HG Warning! Just because a menu selection is spun as "light," it's not necessarily a good choice. Case in point? IHOP's new Simple & Fit Spinach & Mushroom Hash Brown Stack has 570 calories and 31g fat. Nothing fit about that. And T.G.I. Friday's touts that its Right Portion, Right Price menu options have under 750 calories each (umm, shouldn't most menu items?), but the two salads have 28 - 36g fat. (And the higher-fat salad doesn't factor in dressing!) So ALWAYS check the numbers (online or in stores). Happy chewing!

Stuff You Didn't Know You Needed...

Coffee Is Good for You: From Vitamin C and Organic Foods to Low-Carb and Detox Diets, The Truth About Diet and Nutrition Claims - There are a bazillion facts and falsehoods swirling around about what's good and what's bad for you, what does and what doesn't support weight loss, etc. If you want the unbiased facts broken down for you (complete with a Truth Scale to make things even clearer), grab a copy of this book by HG BFF Robert J. Davis, PhD. Super-interesting, a good read, and a GREAT resource.

Gamago Swiss Measuring Spoons - Not only is this device a clutter-saving marvel, but it's also ideal for those who can never seem to find the right measuring spoon in their kitchen drawers. (We've been there.) We'll take five, please...

RSVP International Pink Onion Goggles - What can we say? We want these and we want 'em NOW. These adorable goggles protect your peepers from the onion vapors that cause tears to flow. We like them because they're protective yet stylish enough that we won't feel like we're back in our sophomore-year chemistry class.

The Buzz...

No, it's NOT too cold to eat frozen goodies -- you know, if you eat them indoors while wearing a sweater. Baskin-Robbins has added a new scoopable fro yo to the BRight Choices lineup: Berry Nut Honey. This variety features honey-vanilla-flavored yogurt with a triple berry ribbon and honey-oat-almond bits. YUM. A 2.5-oz. scoop has only 140 calories! ***OK, so maybe you still think it's a tad chilly to indulge in frozen desserts. Good thing Extra Dessert Delights sugar-free gum now comes in this limited-edition flavor... Rainbow Sherbet! Chew to your sweet tooth's content without any risk of brain freeze (or cavities). ***Hypothetically, what would YOU give up in order to lose ten pounds? Life Time Fitness recently conducted a survey asking this very question. Get this: A whopping 64 percent of respondents said they wouldn't shut off their cell phones, not even for a day, to shed the weight. However, 30 percent said they'd go without sex for a month -- 10 percent would abstain for A YEAR OR MORE to shed ten pounds. Click here for more findings. ***In the tech world, Kraft and Intel recently unveiled a vending machine that dispenses samples of Temptations by Jell-O... but only to those who pass a facial recognition test confirming they're adults. Poor kiddies -- but that leaves more for us grown-ups! ***New Hungry Girl episode alert: "Chinese Food" airs THIS Sunday (1/15) at 10am/9c on Food Network!
