Fun Fro-Yo-Shop Happenings: New Flavors & Better-for-You Toppings!

Several popular frozen-yogurt chains are gearing up for summer with amazing new options! Check 'em out...

New Greek Yogurt Flavors at TCBY - Two fruity varieties of the chain's protein-packed Greek yogurt are joining the original Honey Vanilla: Blueberry and Pomegranate! Plus, due to overwhelming demand, the brand's now planning to make the limited-time Greek yogurt a permanent menu fixture. TCBY's Greek fro yo contains 100 - 110 fat-free calories per 4-oz. serving.

Red Mango's Latest Flavor... Honey Badger! - The YouTube sensation (Google it if you dare) has become Red Mango's newest star flavor. We're hoping the limited-time yogurt tastes more like natural sweetness and less like short-legged mammals. Just 100 calories and no fat in a 1/2-cup serving.

Pinkberry Raises the Topping Bar and Adds a Fruity New Flavor - P-berry is saying sayonara to toppings with trans fats, hydrogenated oils, and high-fructose corn syrup and adding some better-for-you stuff, including fresh watermelon, a balsamic glaze, and fresh watermelon puree. Plus, the brand is rolling out a new flavor of fro yo -- Strawberry! -- with 110 fat-free calories per 1/2-cup serving. Sweet!

HG Heads-Up! The serving sizes given for the fro-yo stats are NOT necessarily the amounts served! Red Mango's small cup holds closer to 5 ounces, and a small cup at Pinkberry holds about 3/4 cup. (And those are just estimates... You KNOW those towering swirls vary in size.) Click here for our awesome survival guide, and watch those portions!

The Buzz...

Domino's appears to be hopping on the gluten-free trend, adding Gluten Free Crust to its menu... but wait. Since it's made in a regular kitchen, it runs the risk of gluten exposure. A disclaimer on the Domino's website reads, "The National Foundation for Celiac Awareness supports the availability of Domino's Gluten Free Crust but CANNOT recommend the pizza for customers with celiac disease. Customers with gluten sensitivities should exercise judgment in consuming this pizza." Click for more info. BE AWARE if you've got celiac disease... and maybe share this info with any pals who have celiac disease and might be drawn in by gluten-free crust. ***The latest celebrity making moves to reduce our nation's junk-food consumption is... Mickey Mouse! (Kind of.) The Walt Disney Company recently announced guidelines stating that any product advertised during its kid-geared TV shows and radio programs and on its websites must comply with new nutritional standards. WOW! Consistent with federal criteria, the new guidelines promote eating fruit and veggies and limiting calories, saturated fat, sodium, and sugar. This means many kinds of candy, sugared cereal, and fast food will be banned from advertising. Because of existing contracts, the changes won't take effect until 2015, but still! Way to go, Mouse. ***Don't be fooled... Just because a food label features the words "whole grain," it's not necessarily a good source of fiber. New research reveals that many products with whole-grain claims contain less than 3g fiber per serving. Read that nutrition panel! ***In so-wacky-we-couldn't-make-it-up news, lizard saliva is apparently the latest cure for food cravings. Yup. Researchers suspect that a natural substance obtained from the saliva of North America's largest lizard, the Gila monster (!!!), could be used to reduce food cravings. A synthetic version of the substance is already used to manage blood sugar in diabetics. Despite these recent findings, we do NOT recommend a reptilian make-out session to curb desires for specific foods. And that's all we've got. HG out!
