Snack to the Future: Food Trends for 2013!

We're always curious as to what's hot on the food horizon, but it's not always guilt-free or very interesting. Luckily, these findings from the Culinary Visions Panel trend report for the coming year have our guilt-free radars buzzing with interest!

Pickled Products Popping Up - Restaurant chefs are very into pickling veggies these days, which adds major flavor without many calories. And as trends often do, this may trickle down to the mainstream, leading to fancier pickled products on store shelves and in chain eateries. Stay a step ahead of the trend with Foster's All Natural Pickled Asparagus Spears! (They're AMAZING but pretty pricey, so you may wanna split an order with a friend.)

Veggies Take Center Stage - Vegetables are (HOORAY!) everywhere, from school cafeterias to quick-service restaurants, and not just the same old boring options. Look for kale (phenomenal recipe coming up next week in your HG email!), SUPER broccoli (hello, Beneforté!), and French fries made from unexpected veggies (See chapter 12 of HUNGRY GIRL TO THE MAX! for TEN non-potato fry recipes!).

"Pure and Simple" Foods - Many people are trying to get back to basics with their eating habits, focusing on nutritious eats without mile-long ingredient lists. Good news: Real foods with simple ingredients are here to stay. Case in point? A brand-new flavor of a product we love, That's it. fruit bars -- Apple + Mango. (The only ingredients? You guessed it: apple and mango. That's it.)

The Buzz...

With all those turkey burgers and salads out there, is the fast-food industry more calorie conscious than it used to be? Sadly, not really. A study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that while there are some better-for-you items on menus these days, the average calorie count of fast food hasn't actually changed much since 1997. Just because something is marketed as "healthy" doesn't mean it's any lower in calories than the rest of the menu items... Check the stats, and order smart! ***This next story is like 1984 meets Charlie and the Chocolate Factory... Nestlé has placed GPS chips in the wrappers of candy bars sold in the UK and Ireland; once a winning wrapper is opened, a team from Nestlé will TRACK DOWN THE WINNER. A little cool, a little creepy! ***Could chocolate make you super smart? The New England Journal of Medicine recently published a study that found a "close, significant" correlation between a country's per capita chocolate consumption and the number of Nobel laureates from said country. Switzerland (known pros in the world of chocolate making) came out on top. Coincidence? We hope not! ***As much as we love chocolate, crisp and juicy apples are one of our FAVORITE sweet snacks. And there's a new breed of apple-y goodness on the market! The latest apple heading our way is the Sweetie, a fusion of the Gala and Braeburn that's rumored to taste intensely sweet! How 'bout them apples!? ***Let's close out the news with some unintentionally funny vintage food ads -- click for the slide show! (DO IT -- it's totally worth it!) And that's all we've got. HG out!
