Tomorrow Is Free Cone Day at Ben & Jerry's -- Here's How to Celebrate Smart!

What to Order for Free Cone Day at Ben & Jerry's

Ben & Jerry's 2015 Free Cone Day
is April 14th and, oh snap, that's tomorrow! (Side note: How is it the middle of April already?) But before you hit up your local Scoop Shop, make sure your freebie is also a guilt-freebie. Here are our top three tips for getting your scoop on…

1. Shocker alert: Watch out for the Vanilla Greek Frozen Yogurt, because it's unexpectedly high in the stats department. It's not surprising that the Banana Peanut Butter Greek fro yo is high in calories and fat, but we were blown away to learn that the Vanilla variety has 40 percent more fat. Each of those flavors has 210 - 220 calories and 10 - 14g fat (PointsPlus® value 6*) per half-cup scoop... not including the cone. The best yogurt option is the 30 Rock inspired Liz Lemon Greek Frozen Yogurt, with 170 calories and 4g fat per half-cup scoop (PointsPlus® value 4*).

2. Best bet: the Sorbets! There are three super-refreshing flavors waiting to be scooped up: Lemonade, Mango Mango, and Berry Berry Extraordinary. A half-cup scoop has only 90 - 100 fat-free calories (PointsPlus® value 2*). That Mango Mango looks like pure scoopable sunshine...

3. Don't forget to count the cone. Good news, though. The freebies come in standard sugar cones, not in big waffle cones. Not only are sugar cones pretty reasonable in the calorie department -- the average sugar cone has 50 calories -- but they also keep portions in check. It's doubtful you'll wind up with more than a half-cup scoop. Rather skip out on the extra calories? Request your scoop in a cup instead.

Happy Free Cone Day!

Amy's Is Opening a Fast-Food Restaurant
Welcome to Amy's, Can
We Take Your Order?
The Buzz…

Are you sitting down? Good, because Amy's Kitchen -- the peeps behind some of our favorite natural freezer-aisle eats -- is opening a fast-food restaurant. The first location for Amy's Drive Thru is opening its doors next month in northern California. It's times like this we wish we had a Mystery-Machine-style van for HG road trips... ***We understand the allure of cute little foods, but this is a little odd. Some food companies are reportedly creating doll-sized foods that are completely edible. One grower specifically produces tiny fruits and veggies so that kids will play with them, "feed" them to their dolls and stuffed animals, and eventually eat the produce themselves. Other companies are making itty-bitty versions of decadent foods, claiming it's "the ultimate in portion control." Uh, April Fools' joke? ***And the US government wants to help you shop smart and cut down on food waste. The free USDA FoodKeeper app (available for iPhone and Android) has info and basic storage timelines for over 400 foods, from the pantry to the freezer. You can even enter the date when you purchased a food product, and the app will send you a notification when it's about to expire. (Look for the calendar icon when viewing specific foods in the app.) Thanks, USDA peeps! And that's all we've got. 'Til next time… Chew the right thing!
