Big Brands Continue to Clean Up Their Food: Taco Bell, Walmart & More

More Food Companies Making Healthy Changes

Major chain restaurants and retailers are rolling in fast and furious with consumer-demanded updates to their products. Artificial additives are dropping like flies, and a lot more attention is being paid to the source of ingredients. The latest changes...

Taco Bell has vowed to remove all artificial flavors and colors by the end of the year. Plus, T. Bell plans to nix added trans fats and upgrade its palm oil to a more sustainable version. Even more additives should be gone by the end of 2017. Word is that these changes will affect 95 percent of the menu items. WOW. P.S. Check out the recently launched nutrition calculator -- it allows you to customize your order, and see the changing stats!

Pizza Hut announced a similar plan -- artificial flavors and colors will be gone by the end of July. Also on the way is an interactive nutrition calculator and allergen tool. And Pizza Hut will continue to reduce the sodium content of its pizzas and offer those great Skinny Slices. Nice!

Target recently made headlines when it announced it would no longer showcase packaged foods, instead focusing on fresher fare like Greek yogurt and veggies. This doesn't mean they'll stop selling the packaged stuff, but it does mean the more natural items will be featured front and center, making consumers more likely to purchase them.

Lastly, Walmart has unveiled new criteria for animal welfare standards when it comes to products sold at its stores. The retailer lists the globally recognized "Five Freedoms" the animals should be granted, including freedom from discomfort and freedom from fear and distress. Love that...

Keep these changes comin', food peeps!
