This Week's 3 Things You Need to Know...

Researchers find eating celery really does burn more calories than it contains!

It's about time someone put this theory to the test! According to the Daily Mail, in a recent experiment conducted by UK researchers, a subject was given 53 calories' worth of raw celery as well as a 53-calorie celery smoothie (ick). Get this: The subject burned 72 calories eating the celery and a whopping 112 calories drinking the (ICK) liquid celery! Apparently, liquefying the celery broke down the fiber and released the nutrients, giving the guy's liver more work to do. (Note: Do NOT use this as an excuse to drink calorie-packed smoothies or sugary juices.) Other foods commonly thought to have negative calories: grapefruit, cucumber, and lettuce -- all things we personally like more than celery.

The latest Starbucks sensations: shaved-ice drinks!

Move over Pink Drink... Starbucks Granitas have arrived. Featured on the Sunset Menu and available after 3pm, the drinks feature finely shaved ice (lemonade flavored or lightly sweetened) and come in three varieties: Youthberry White Tea, Strawberry Lemon Limeade, and Caramel Espresso. Enjoy a Tall one for 100 - 130 calories (SmartPoints® value 6 - 8*). How refreshing!

Eating grapes could help counteract a high-fat diet.

Superfood indeed: A new pair of studies revealed that the polyphenols found in grapes may help offset some negative health effects caused by a diet that's high in saturated fat. Subjects who consumed grapes while on a fat-rich diet developed less overall body fat than those who didn't chomp on grapes. We wouldn't suggest going hog-wild with a high-fat diet, but incorporating grapes into your life certainly couldn't hurt!
