What's New & What's Not: The Latest Dietary Guidelines for Americans

Last week, the U.S. government officially released NEW recommended dietary guidelines. What's different? The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010 aims to address an unhealthy population... which, let's face it, we ARE. Here are some specific changes since the '05 edition...

Up Your Seafood Intake - New evidence supports the fact that the health benefits outweigh the risks (like those associated with mercury). Aim to get 20 percent of your protein from seafood, about 8 oz. per week.

Specific Foods to Limit - Ditch these substantial sources of sodium, saturated fat, cholesterol, trans fat, and added sugars. Top offenders include bread, butter, full-fat cheese, soda and energy drinks, fatty meats, and grain-based desserts (a.k.a. donuts, etc.).

Eating Behaviors to Avoid - Those with strong ties to obesity include excessive TV viewing, skipping breakfast, and eating fast food once or more each week.

What's the same? Control your portions, watch your sodium intake, fill your diet with fruits and veggies, and drink water instead of sugary drinks -- sounds pretty reasonable to us. Look for more out of HG Land in the coming weeks regarding the new guidelines...

The double W's Kitchen Companion app not only gives you the basic info for all its recipes, but it also helps you assemble a shopping list, walks you through tricky preparations with video demos, and has preset timers BUILT INTO THE RECIPES. We do wish it included full nutritional stats, but still... Amazing! ***It's as if someone has started a slimmed-down cocktail craze or something. (Hmmm... Who might have inspired that?) T.G.I. Friday's is officially riding the low-cal-drink express with new Skinny Margarita and Skinny Blackberry Margarita offerings. Way to get on board... but do we REALLY have to stress again how much we want nutritional info on your website?? ***Want to know how much people eat where you live? (Don't worry, it's by county -- there are no hidden cameras in your home.) Check out the USDA's Food Environment Atlas and scope out the facts. See where people eat a lot of fruit 'n veggies and which areas' residents guzzle soda in a serious way. Neat! ***And if you just discovered that you live in a place where people consume a lot of solid fats, here's a heads-up. New research shows that having too much unhealthy fat in your diet could increase your risk of depression.
