A Pretzel Walks Into a Bar...
A Pretzel Walks Into a Bar...
Spotted on Shelves...

Quaker Chewy Smashbars - Quaker is really raising the snack bar when it comes to 90-calorie treats. In Pretzel Berry and Graham Pretzel, these soft cereal bars are crammed with sweet, salty, chocolatey deliciousness! (If you have milk allergies, you might want to avoid these.) Each bar has 90 calories, 2g fat, 85 - 90mg sodium, 18g carbs, 2g fiber, 6g sugars, and 1g protein (PointsPlus® value 2*). Simply smashing...

Yoplait Light Raspberry Lemonade
- It's hard to think of something more summery than lemonade (maybe sunscreen, but that's not nearly as delicious). This new flavor of fat-free yogurt from Yoplait is a great way to infuse warm-weather fun into anytime eating. Each 6-oz. container has 100 calories, 0g fat, 90mg sodium, 20g carbs, 0g fiber, 15g sugars, and 6g protein (PointsPlus® value 3*). The hits just keep on coming...

Nasoya Super Hummus - It's a dip! It's a spread! No, it's... SUPER HUMMUS! The peeps at Nasoya are speaking our language -- this stuff is made with chickpeas and soybeans, and it has half the fat and twice as much protein as the leading packaged hummus. WOW! In Classic Original and Spinach Garlic, each 2-tbsp. serving has 50 calories, 3g fat, 120mg sodium, 2g carbs, <1 - 1g fiber, 1g sugars, and 4g protein (PointsPlus® value 1*). Cape not included...

Starbucks Thinks Inside the Box!
Have you heard about the under-500-calories Bistro Boxes at Starbucks? The snack-sized varieties are a lot like the snack plates that The 'Bucks has had for a while (but that's cool, because we still heart them). But the entrée options are completely new and have just 350 - 420 calories each! The one with the most impressive stats is the Sesame Noodles box, with 350 calories, 11g fat, and a PointsPlus® value of 9*. Each entrée even includes a piece of premium chocolate for dessert. These people think of everything...

Xtreme Eating Awards! Warning: Offensive Nutritionals Ahead...
Once again, our pals at the Center for Science in the Public Interest have called out a handful of the worst food items sold at chain restaurants. Making the cut this year? The infamous, 1,260-calorie Denny's Fried Cheese Melt platter, which features a grilled cheese sandwich stuffed with fried mozzarella sticks. Other (dis)honorees include The Cheesecake Factory's Ultimate Red Velvet Cake Cheesecake (we'll stick with any of these red velvet swaps!), Great Steak's King Fries (our disco fries are more fun!), and IHOP's Monster Bacon 'N Beef Cheeseburger (we've got a patty swap!). Chew wisely...

Papaya Recall! Check Your Fruit Bowl!
Papaya Recall! Check Your Fruit Bowl!
The Buzz...

Recall alert! A top papaya distributor is recalling ALL papayas sold in the U.S. and Canada prior to July 23rd, due to potential salmonella contamination. Click here for full info. We've never had much love for the taste of papayas, but this is a much bigger problem. ***McDonald's is making nutritional improvements to its Happy Meals by reducing the amount of French fries in each one to a 100-calorie portion. All of the kiddie meals will also include apple slices. Changes will be in place across the board by 2012, and the resulting meals will have under 600 calories each. This is definitely a step in the right direction! ***A recent survey shows that while shoppers previously sought out products that had LESS of certain bad-in-excess things (fat, sugar, salt, etc.), today's shoppers seek out products with MORE healthful qualities (protein, antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, etc.). The survey also showed that fewer people are reading nutritional labels as they shop. Careful, people, it's all important! ***We mentioned the original energizing Perky Jerky a while ago, but now there's a new variety -- Turkey Perky Jerky! Not only does it have a name that's a lot of fun to say, but it's also sweet, tender, guilt-free, and delicious. And the extra energy kick (courtesy of the guarana plant) is a nice bonus. ***According to a new study published by The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, routinely eating the same foods -- whatever they are -- can lead to consuming less of them overall. Makes sense... The idea of only eating the same old foods is making us less hungry already. ***FINAL COUNTDOWN! Only SIX DAYS until the season 2 premiere of Hungry Girl on Food Network! Set your DVR, write yourself a reminder, set an alarm on your smartphone... Just don't miss "Under 200" when it airs Sunday, August 7th, at 10am/9c on Food Network! And that's all we've got. HG out!

CHEW ON THIS:

Mmmmmm! Today, August 1st, is National Raspberry Cream Pie Day. We highly recommend making our Crazy-Amazing Coconut Cream Pie or Bananarama Cream Pie and topping it with tons of fresh raspberries!
