Avoid a Pricey Thanksgiving!

Throwing a feast for the holidays can be expensive, it's true. The average cost of Thanksgiving dinner is up by about 13 percent since last year, and a survey by CouponCabin.com found that 44 percent of people hosting the big meal this year feel at least somewhat overwhelmed by the financial burden. Here are a few quick tips from us on how to keep that price tag reasonable...

Clip coupons and look for online deals. Coupons are a very easy and efficient way to save dough. By scoping out deals before you go shopping, you can find the best prices and plan accordingly. So don't just head to one grocery store with a single list; click here to start your bargain hunting.

Celebrate potluck-style! This way one person doesn't get stuck spending their paycheck (and their entire day!) preparing the whole feast. Ask everyone to bring a certain type of dish so you don't wind up with a dozen green-bean casseroles and nothing else. We've got some recipe suggestions for you right here!

Don't overdo it.
You never wanna run short on food, but how often do you end up with more leftovers than you can fit in your fridge? Make a list of all the menu items in advance and ask yourself if ALL of them are necessary. (No party of fourteen needs nine pies!) Scaling back means less money spent AND less temptation to overindulge at dinner.

If you're one of the lucky ones in a position to do so, consider donating to a food bank to help out families in need. Click to find one in your area, or click here for info on Feeding America's Give A Meal program. Happy holidays, everyone!

Wacky Ways to Get Your Caffeine Fix!

Step aside, soda and coffee -- a few new caffeine vehicles are rolling in. Check 'em out...

Drop It: MiO Energy - An amped-up version of MiO Liquid Water Enhancer is on the way. Starting in December, according to the Financial Times, you'll be able to add drops to your H2O that flavor AND caffeinate it. Choose from Green Thunder, which we can only imagine is electrifying in taste, and Black Cherry!

Breathe It: AeroShot Pure Energy - At first glance, this looks like a tube of lip balm. But in actuality, it's a mini inhaler-like device that delivers a puff of powder containing caffeine and B vitamins. Strange, but true, people...

Chew It: Military-Issue Caffeinated Beef Jerky - By now, you may have heard about Perky Jerky, an energizing meat snack that we've buzzed about before. Now the U.S. Army is reportedly preparing to include something similar in soldiers' MREs (a.k.a. Meals, Ready to Eat). Each serving is said to include as much caffeine as a cup of coffee. Hooah!

The Buzz...

Good news, snackers! Recent research indicates that if you want to maintain weight loss, you may want to get your snack on. Subjects who had gone from overweight or obese to a normal weight ate more snacks than overweight subjects -- they also reported more frequent physical activity. So snack smart and get movin'! ***Feeling down? This news should cheer you up -- a recent study among those with metabolic syndrome uncovered a link between eating nuts and an increase in serotonin, a known contributor to happiness and well-being. Improved heart health is another bonus, so snack on nuts! Keep portions in check with 100-calorie packs. ***Hey, vegetarians! Does all the Turkey Day talk have you feeling a little left out? Tofurky has your back! Snag one of the brand's Vegetarian Feasts, and you'll get a six-serving meal of Tofurky Roast (with stuffing made from brown rice and whole-wheat bread), gravy, and an Amy's Organic Chocolate Cake. It even includes a faux wishbone (weird, but true). Find it in the freezer section! ***If you wolf down black licorice by the fistful, you might wanna scale back. The FDA recently announced that people over 40 who eat 2 ounces of black licorice daily for 2 weeks or longer could be at risk for heart complications. Yikes! ***You've been hearing the old "patience is a virtue" adage since you were a kid... but it turns out that patience may be physically beneficial! A new report links greater levels of impatience to a higher BMI (body mass index) and obesity risk. Very interesting... And that's all we've got. HG out!

CHEW ON THIS:

Many people have cranberries in mind this week, but did you know that November is National Pomegranate Month? A half-cup serving of pomegranate arils (the juicy seeds) has about 70 calories, 1g fat, and 3.5g fiber. Pom, nom, nom, nom!
