New Denny's Fit Fare Menu Selections
- There are brand-new Fit Fare options on the way, and we totally approve. The Fit Fare Veggie Skillet (loaded with veggies, potatoes, and scrambled egg whites) and a grilled-chicken spinach salad with bacon are set to launch any day now. We're told each will have 300 - 330 calories and 8 - 11g fat (before dressing and not including bread, for the salad). If you're heading to the diner chain, check out the new Meal Calculator and plan ahead!

Fazoli's 400 Calories or Less Pasta Entrées - Have you tried these yet? In addition to its 500 Calories or Less items, the Italian chain has pasta dishes that clock in at 400 calories or less each! Considering what we've seen from similar restaurants, this deserves some credit and applause. Plus, for the rest of January, you can get $1 off every $5 purchase toward 500 Calories or Less entrées when you bring in your favorite workout video. Don't be embarrassed to flash that Jane Fonda DVD... Saving cash and calories RULES.

Chick-fil-A's New Better-For-You Kid's Meal Options - These got our attention, because now even WE would consider grabbing a mini-meal. The new Grilled Nuggets have only 110 calories for a 6-piece order. There are also 60-calorie packets of squeezable cinnamon applesauce. Nicely done... Now what about a 10-piece of those nuggets for us grown-ups? Pretty please?!

Why Your Diet Might Not Be Working

For a lot of people, the "eating better in the New Year" thing is still weighing pretty heavily (no pun intended) on the mind. Well, some new info has emerged that may help you make the best of this year's weight-management efforts. A recent study found that people who overate on a low-protein diet gained less weight than other overeaters. But it also found that a low-protein diet meant lower levels of energy expenditure (read: calories burned) and lean body mass. Bottom line: For the best long-term results, aim for a reasonable amount of protein (and, um, try not to overeat). In other news, while we're big fans of fruits and veggies, a recent study of 300,000+ subjects found that just eating lots of produce wasn't enough to influence weight loss. However, results suggest that loading up on fruits and veggies could stave off weight gain among people who stop smoking. Interesting! So what have we learned? It's important to have a balanced diet (including things like lean protein, fruits, and veggies) and to pay attention to calorie intake -- don't just choose one or the other!
