Sweet Spuds!
Sweet Spuds!
Spotted on Shelves (Super Bowl Edition!)...

Food Should Taste Good Kettle Cooked Sweet Potato Chips - If you're not excited, go back and reread the name of this product. SWEET POTATO CHIPS. YAY! The sweet 'n savory crisps come in Original, Barbeque, Salt & Pepper, and Salt & Vinegar. Each 1-oz. serving (about 14 - 15 chips) has 150 calories, 8g fat, 140mg sodium, 17g carbs, 3g fiber, 3 - 4g sugars, and 1g protein (PointsPlus® value 4*). Although they are reduced-fat chips with a good dose of fiber, they're not low in fat and calories, so still watch those portions. Find them in stores and online.

Morningstar Farms Veggie Dogs - Stop the presses! We've finally found a veggie hot dog that we enjoy. These once-discontinued pups are back. The texture is appealing, the flavor is a little smoky and definitely tasty, and they're extra-delicious prepared in a skillet. Each link has 50 calories, 0.5g fat, 430mg sodium, 4g carbs, <1g fiber, 2g sugars, and 7g protein (PointsPlus® value 1*). We think they'd be FANTASTIC on Super Bowl Sunday in our De-Pudged Pigs in a Blanket recipe!

Sinless Low Calorie Cocktail Mixes
- We mentioned the original Margarita Mix years ago, but now there are more fun flavors: Strawberry Margarita Mix and Sweet & Sour Mix. The strawberry one is an HG fave. All-natural and sweetened with stevia, each 3-oz. serving of this non-alcoholic mix has only 5 calories and 2g carbs. Track down a bottle near you or just buy it online. Garnished with a blue umbrella, a red-berry 'rita is appropriate for Patriots fans and Giants enthusiasts alike!

Chili's Steps It Up: Lighter Choices Plus a Handy Web Tool!

With all the big chain restaurants lightening things up for the New Year (and hopefully for the rest of the year too!), Chili's is finally getting in the game. Along with a few existing menu items, the Lighter Choices menu features three new meal options -- a Grilled Chicken Salad (420 calories, 22g fat, PointsPlus® value 11*), Sweet & Spicy Chicken (670 calories, 18g fat, PointsPlus® value 18*), and the Lighter Choice 6 oz. Classic Sirloin (260 calories, 7g fat, PointsPlus® value 7*). Cut the fat count in the salad by skipping the cheese and swapping the dressing for a low-fat or fat-free option. And save calories with the Sweet & Spicy Chicken by getting it with double veggies and no rice. The steak item, however, with its steamed broccoli and pico de gallo, needs no modifications as far as we can tell! The full lineup ranges from 260 to 680 calories and 7 to 25 grams of fat. So how do you know on the spot which items are the best choices? Chili's menu has a super-helpful new feature: Each Lighter Choices option has a Quick Response barcode. Scan the code with a smartphone, and the calorie and fat counts for that dish will appear on your phone. Sure, we'd prefer full stats -- but it's a start. Thanks, Chili's!

FiberGourmet Half Calorie Crackers
- No, these don't have half a calorie per cracker, but they do have half as many calories as similar crackers -- plus LOTS of fiber. In addition to Original, these crispy snacks come in Everything (like the bagels) and Cinnamon & Sugar. Each pouch has only 70 calories, 2g fat, and a whopping 12g fiber (PointsPlus® value 2*). While you're placing an order, stock up on FiberGourmet's light pastas, the highest-fiber noodles in the biz.

Bissinger's Naturals Chocolate Covered Black Sesame Crunch
- Who knew sesame seeds and chocolate could be such an AMAZING combo?! These crunchy treats aren't super-low in fat and calories, but they do pack in 3 grams of fiber per serving. Eat four pieces for 160 calories and 11g fat (PointsPlus® value 4*). Both your sweet tooth and your need to try new things will be satisfied.

Miko Brand Vegetarian Instant Miso Soup - These little blocks of soup mix include bits of tofu, seaweed, and green onion, and they dissolve the moment the hot water hits 'em. So delicious! And just 25 calories and 1g fat each (PointsPlus® value 1*). Even the sodium count (380mg) is impressive for instant miso soup! Click here to order.

The Buzz...

Heads up, HGers: Time change ahead! No, daylight savings isn't starting already -- Hungry Girl is moving to a new time slot on Food Network. Starting this week, catch all the guilt-free fun with Lisa (a.k.a. HG herself) Sunday mornings at 8:30am/7:30c. This weekend, it's "Date Night." You can also see HG episodes from season 2 make their Cooking Channel debut Saturday mornings at 10:30am ET/7:30am PT. This Saturday's episode is "More Surprises, Shockers & Swaps!" ***Many of you have written in expressing your sadness over the lack of Fiber One Yogurt at the supermarkets. Could everyone's favorite 50-calorie yogurt be gone for good?! According to the company, it has NOT been discontinued (whew!), but the distribution has been reduced (bummer). If it's no longer at your local market, request it! There's power in numbers, people. ***A new study shows that it is possible to eat at restaurants and still lose weight. What's the trick? Mindful eating. Among middle-aged women who went out to eat three days or more per week, those who attended weekly group sessions focused on mindful-eating meditations, education, and strategies took in fewer calories and lost more weight than subjects who went it alone. We can't offer weekly sessions, but might we suggest our restaurant survival guides? ***If you have a sweet tooth, there's a good chance you have a sweet personality to go with it. Research compiled from five different studies indicates that people who like sweet foods are more likely to exhibit pro-social (read: friendly and likable) behaviors and personalities. No word about those who like sour, salty, or bitter foods. ***Tune-in alert! Don't miss Lisa on The Dr. Oz Show TOMORROW (Tuesday, 1/31). She'll be teaching the doctor himself how to whip up Fettuccine Hungry Girlfredo. EXCITING!!! Click for show times. And that's all we've got. HG out!
