Blue Diamond Natural Pepper Jack Cheese Almond Nut Thins - Crunch on this -- a new flavor of BD's nutty-good crackers is here, and it's loaded with spicy-cheese goodness. Plus, these crisps are made with almonds, which we love. Even better? A 16-cracker serving has 130 calories, 3.5g fat, 210mg sodium, 22g carbs, <1g fiber, 1g sugars, and 3g protein (PointsPlus® value 4*). Find 'em at a store near you, and chomp away.

Amy's Gluten Free Organic Sandwich Rounds - WOW! Our BFFs over at Amy's have launched a super-exciting bread product! Not only are these flat buns gluten-free, but also they're free of soy and dairy. Each one has only 90 calories, 4g fat, 135mg sodium, 13g carbs, 1g fiber, 1g sugars, and 2g protein (PointsPlus® value 3*). Check the freezer section at natural-foods stores and other markets. Then just thaw or toast!

Sunsweet Dark Chocolate PlumSweets - They call these chocolate-covered treats "dried plums," but everyone knows they're PRUNES. Still, they're indulgent, sweet, and AWESOME -- and better for you than straight-up chocolate candy. Each serving (about 1/4 cup) has 190 calories, 9g fat, 0mg sodium, 26g carbs, 3g fiber, 20g sugars, and 2g protein (PointsPlus® value 5*). Grab a bag from your local supermarket -- in the dried-fruit section or produce aisle -- or just order 'em right now.

From the Wild World of Weight-Loss Studies...

New information is coming out all the time about what does and doesn't work when trying to shed stray pounds. Some of the more interesting breakthroughs? A researcher from the National Institutes of Health has come up with a whole new equation for how weight loss works. Instead of the standard formula, which states that each pound of weight loss is directly proportional to 3,500 calories cut/burned, his theory takes into account initial body fat and changes in weight during the weight-loss process. So what's the formula? It's complicated. Like, super-mathematically complicated. But reportedly, this model is only meant to be used by doctors and other researchers, for now at least. Hopefully, they'll put it to good use soon! Next, a study found that during team-based weight-loss competitions (think The Biggest Loser for an online community... without the camera crew), weight loss was similar among teammates. People on a team with many weight-dropping participants were more likely to succeed themselves. Sounds like it's a good idea to buddy up with pals you think would be successful dieters. Go, team! And finally, new research supports the idea that fructose (a common sugar) itself isn't a super-villain in the world of weight gain. The study found that when other carbs with the same amount of calories were consumed, they had the same impact on weight as fructose. So stay on top of your overall calorie intake. Keep studying, science people!

The Buzz...

Do you hate lugging around plastic containers and bulky bottles when you're eating and drinking on the go? This may become a problem of the past. A team of scientists from Harvard University is working on WikiCells, edible packaging technology for food products. They've already made several items, like a tomato skin filled with gazpacho. Who needs plastic? ***He only plays a bad guy on TV, people! HG-pal Reed Alexander (better known as Carly's nemesis Nevel on iCarly) has joined forces with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation to help kids eat better at lunchtime. Check out Reed's school-friendly recipes, which meet the new USDA standards for school meals. And visit his smart-eating website, KewlBites.com, too! ***More fun from an HG friend -- Dr. Charles Platkin, a.k.a. The Diet Detective, has a brand-new book out. The Diet Detective's All-American Diet: Lose Weight with the Foods You Already Love to Eat from Your Favorite Supermarket and Restaurant Choices is about... well, exactly what the title says. Check it out! ***Think that you're too well informed to be fooled by food fakers? Think again. A new marketing study found that those who are the most concerned about avoiding negative nutrients (i.e., excess calories and fat) are the most likely to fall for sneaky packaging tricks, like listing unrealistically small portion sizes to keep the numbers down. READ CAREFULLY. That's all we've got. HG out!
