Spotted on Shelves...

Gardein Mandarin Orange Crispy Chick’n - This meatless product is so good, we're a little scared that once we tell you about it, there won't be any left for us. If you're a sucker for Chinese takeout, this is for you! A serving (2.7 oz. chick'n plus 1 tbsp. sauce) has 165 calories, 7g fat, 325mg sodium, 9g carbs, 1g fiber, 3g sugars, and 17g protein (PointsPlus® value 4*). Find it in the freezer case, and STOCK UP... before we take it all.

South Beach Diet Snack Smoothies - Most smoothies out there are more like meal replacements, with their high calorie counts, but these petite containers are straight-up sippable snacks! In Perfectly Peach, Wild Berry, and Strawberry Banana, each 8-oz. bottle has 100 calories, 3.5g fat, 20mg sodium, 14g carbs, 6g fiber, 8g sugars, and 6g protein (PointsPlus® value 2*). Low in calories and packed with fiber and protein? We'll drink to that!

Good Health Natural Foods Half Naked Popcorn - When it comes to fashion, half naked is rarely a smart choice. When it comes to food? Perfect! This lightly flavored popcorn comes in original, Wild Blue Buffalo (our favorite!), and Pop Chocolate. Each 1-oz. serving (about 4 cups) has 110 - 130 calories, 2.5 - 3g fat, 75 - 150mg sodium, 21 - 23g carbs, 4g fiber, 0 - 4g sugars, and 3 - 4g protein (PointsPlus® value 3*). Track some down soon!

Techie News! The Weight-Loss Connection...

There are plenty of depressing studies out there linking weight gain to technology (TV viewing, laptop use, etc.), so we're THRILLED to report these latest findings, which link weight loss to technology! In one study, a group of participants used Twitter for social support and lost more weight than the group that didn't use the social networking site. The tweeting group conversed by posting updates, lending support, etc., and also accessed info from a weight-loss counselor. Not bad for 140 characters or less! Another study found that using a mobile app to track daily activity and eating habits helped people lose weight and keep it off... even more so when users also attended exercise and nutrition classes. Be smart, and use technology as a supplement to -- not a substitute for -- your weight-loss strategy! One great resource getting an upgrade is the website/mobile app MyFitnessPal: The company just partnered up with foodservice company Compass Group. Now Compass Group's large database of nutritional info -- featuring menu items from schools, corporate cafes, sports arenas, and more -- is available within MyFitnessPal's MASSIVE database. Dining at Dartmouth? Just search "Dartmouth" for calorie counts across the campus. YAY, TEAMWORK!

Vending Machines: Better Than Ever!

Vending machines have been stocking more smart-eating options for a while now. One health-focused company in Canada even reported that its top-selling snack is Popchips! And more improvements are on the way...

More Info! Last year, major soda companies announced they'd begin displaying calorie counts on vending machines in 2013. Which is now. We're excited to see this project launch -- Chicago, IL, and San Antonio, TX, are first on the list.

More Guilt-Free Picks! Refrigerated machines that dispense perishable foods are on the rise. And check out the options from Fresh Healthy Vending -- yogurt, coconut water, freeze-dried fruit, and more!

More Specialty Drinks! The JambaGO self-service system that debuted last year just launched its 404th location! And we look forward to seeing Seattle's Best Coffee Hot Drink Centers (from the Starbucks peeps) popping up everywhere. Who's thirsty?

The Buzz...

Once again, the Center for Science in the Public Interest has released its annual XTREME EATING list. Some of this year's worst offenders? A slice of Chocolate Zuccotto Cake from Maggiano's Little Italy with 1,820 calories (ZOINKS!) and the Bistro Shrimp Pasta at The Cheesecake Factory with 3,120 calories (FLAT-OUT OFFENSIVE!)!!! Here's an extremely good idea: Make our Chocolate-on-Chocolate Frosted Cake and Shrimpy-rific SW Fettuccine instead. ***On the lighter side, Sbarro has just launched a 270-calorie Skinny Slice at participating locations. Far from boring, it's loaded with portobello mushrooms, caramelized onions, roasted red and green peppers, plus two kinds of cheese. Mmmm! ***Heads up, bagels down! A recall has been issued in the Southeastern U.S. for select bagels from Thomas', Sara Lee, Publix, and Weight Watchers. Click for the full info, and check your bagel bags before you chew. ***Good news from Dunkin' Donuts -- the chain is expanding to Southern California!!! The bad news? Not 'til 2015. Aw, man... ***Heard about the new Girl Scouts Mango Crèmes? They're pumped up with NutriFusion, a nutritional enhancer derived from fruits and veggies. Each 3-cookie serving does have 180 calories and 8g fat (and doesn't actually contain any mango!), so don't go too crazy with 'em... ***Hungry Girl events reminder! Come hang with Lisa (HG herself) THIS SATURDAY (2/2) at the CBS 6 Healthy Lifestyle Expo in Richmond, VA -- snacks will be provided! And come to the book-signing event next Thursday (2/7) in Orange County, CA -- enjoy some of our favorite snacks, plus sample HG's Veggie So Low Mein, featuring House Foods Tofu Shirataki noodles! Click here for details on both events. And that's all we've got. HG out!
