The Sleep/Diet Cycle (and How to Break It)!

Over the years, there have been many studies on the connection between sleep patterns and dietary habits. Well, recent research suggests two things: Poor nutrition could play a role in sleep deprivation, and sleep deprivation could lead to bad food decisions. Sounds like a pretty vicious cycle, eh? Here's the story... Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania evaluated data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. After grouping subjects by sleep patterns, they found that the "short" sleep group (five to six hours per night) consumed the most calories. Another study -- this one small, yet intriguing -- found that sleep-deprived subjects chose larger portion sizes of energy-dense (read: high-calorie) food items than they did when they'd gotten a solid night's sleep. So what can you do to ensure healthy sleep patterns and avoid the related overconsumption of calories? Findings from the first study suggest the following...

1. Eat a wide variety of foods, including those with vitamin C (yay, oranges and bell peppers!), lycopene (found in tomatoes), and selenium (a mineral present in nuts, meat, and shellfish).

2. Drink plenty of water. (Just not SO much that you find yourself getting up a dozen times in the middle of the night to use the bathroom!)

3. Aim for seven to eight hours of sleep per night, the amount of sleep associated with positive health and well-being.

And here's an HG tip... If you DO find yourself sleep deprived, avoid the large-portion trap by keeping your kitchen stocked with pre-portioned foods and single-serving snacks!

The Buzz...

Thinking about lunch already? Good news: A new study found that for weight loss, it may be better to eat lunch early. Participants who ate lunch late lost less weight (and at a slower rate) than the early-eating group. However, "early" here refers to any time before 3 p.m. -- we can't wait that long for lunch anyway! ***Speaking of lunch, have you ever wondered what it would be like to make a sandwich IN SPACE? Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield breaks it down for you. Apparently, tortillas are preferable to bread (look Ma, no crumbs!) and peanut butter packets are essential (we're pretty sure that's Justin's Nut Butter he's got on board!). Click to watch Hadfield play with his food, chase a floating tortilla, and generally be awesome. ***How often do YOU eat fast food? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that from 2007 to 2010, American adults consumed an average of 11.3 percent of their total daily calories from fast food. The report points out that frequent fast-food consumption has been linked to weight gain. We'd like to point out that it is possible to eat fast food in a calorie-conscious way. Scope out our Big Fast-Food Survival Guide! ***Now, a happy dose of nostalgia to wrap things up -- click to view 101 adorable vintage lunch boxes. If only we had number 37... We'd carry a foxy Harrison Ford lunch box EVERYWHERE. And that's all we've got. HG out!
