HG Investigates… The Most Polarizing Pasta Swap on the Planet! (Weigh In!)

Tofu Shirataki noodles have been an HG staple since 2005 -- we consider them the world's best low-calorie pasta swap. But over the years, we've learned that people either love 'em and find them life changing, or they aren't fans of them for various reasons. And in recent years, plain shirataki noodles (without tofu) are becoming more popular. (Did you know there's a difference? There is!) We want to know how YOU feel about Tofu Shirataki. Click here to take our short poll, and give us some answers. We'd love to know what you think. So CLICK NOW and weigh in... Thanks, HGers!

Celebrate Thanksgiving by GIVING! (The 411 on Holiday Food Drives)

Money can get tight around the holidays, but if you're lucky enough to have a little to spare, donating to a local food bank is a great way to help out the less fortunate. Wondering where to start? Check your local supermarket. Tons of them have donation programs this time of year, including Publix, Giant Food, Safeway, and Ralphs. Another great resource is the Feeding America website. Find your local food bank, donate money to the cause, or even start your own virtual food drive! Here at HG, we'll be lending holiday support to Project Angel Food, a Los Angeles charity that brings nutritious meals to people affected by life-threatening illnesses. Click for details on how to help. Now for one of the most creative programs we've found: Musician Jack White and his cohorts at Third Man Records are giving free vinyl records to those who contribute to the Nashville Rescue Mission, with the top donor winning a special limited-edition record. That ROCKS. Thanks all around!

The Buzz...

Cool website alert! So many sites provide nutritional info for restaurant dishes, but with MenuStat, you can generate charts comparing stats for similar items from different places! For example, here's one comparing the calorie content for sandwiches at Panera, Quiznos, and Subway, showing that Quiznos' sandwiches have the highest calorie average. This one compares chain-restaurant salads, and here's a chart on desserts at popular places. Check 'em out, and then make your own charts! ***Wondering how a vegetarian diet compares with others? A recent study compared the dietary patterns of several different types of eaters, and some of the results are surprising! Most groups had similar daily calorie intakes, but semi-vegetarians (those who occasionally eat meat or fish) averaged about 300 fewer calories per day. Despite those calorie statistics, BMI (body mass index) was highest in non-vegetarians and lowest in strict vegetarians. Very interesting! ***As you may have heard, a new ruling by the Food and Drug Administration would essentially eliminate artificial trans fats from the foods we eat. Many food makers have already drastically reduced trans fat in recent years. Do YOU think the FDA should be responsible for banning the fats, or should decisions be left to food companies and consumers? Food for thought... ***And finally, with Thanksgiving looming like Godzilla, we're passing along these mind-blowing tips for your big holiday meal. Apparently, soy sauce adds fast flavor to gravy, and dunking just-boiled potatoes in ice results in the skins easily sliding right off. Nice! And that's all we've got... HG out!
