Diet Detective's 2013 Airline Snacking & Food-Service Ratings!

It's ba-aack! We love checking in with the Diet Detective to see what to expect during upcoming air travel. And DD's latest report on airline food offerings has arrived! This year, Virgin America and Air Canada are at the top of the heap. Virgin even has a Travel Light menu! Plus, we found an impressive Turkey Protein Platter meal option on the airline's website -- it's packed with wholesome stuff and has 410 calories, 13g fat, and 23g protein. And Air Canada works with Food with a Conscience to create some of its menu items. We're jazzed about the Greek yogurt with blueberry and pomegranate -- just 150 calories. Alaska Airlines, United, and JetBlue all deserve snaps for improvement. We love that JetBlue offers free PopCorners Popcorn Chips. But Allegiant Airlines earned the Diet Detective's "Shame on You" award, due to poor food selection (why so many servings in your individual snacks?) and unhelpful media folks. Click to read the extensive report, which includes lots of calorie counts and the amount of walking you would need to do to burn said calories. Just wait 'til they say you're free to walk about the cabin...

The Buzz…

Shocker alert! Listen up, moms... Wondering how many calories are in those fast-food kiddie meals? The Mother Jones website took a look at the numbers, and these meals are hardly happy. The worst offender reported is the Carl's Jr. cheeseburger kids' meal with onion rings and fruit punch, totaling 990 calories! Obviously, you can choose better sides, BUT STILL. Click and watch the video for more frightening findings. ***How healthy is YOUR state? The 2013 report from America's Health Rankings has just been released. In first place is Hawaii, while Mississippi came in last. And good news: Health in the USA is improving overall! Check out the interactive chart for more info. ***Picking up restaurant gift cards as holiday gifts? Here's a roundup of chains offering incentives! Many of those places have been featured in HG survival guides -- check 'em out before you dine! ***A fruit disease called "citrus greening" is sweeping the US, making oranges, lemons, and grapefruits taste bitter. The USDA is on the case, but there's a risk it could wipe out the nations' citrus production for a while. ACK. Speaking of citrus, if you've got a good orange handy, click to learn a new way to peel it! And that's all we've got. HG out!
