Dear Hungry Girl,

I LOVE the Candy Cane Chill Blizzard at Dairy Queen, but I heard a medium one has 800 calories. Can this be true? And if so, what do you have in the way of a swap for me, HG?

Blizzard Babe
Dear Blizzard Babe,

Thanks for the Q! It's hard to believe that a mid-sized serving of cold, creamy peppermint goop could be so CRAZY-HIGH in stats. But it is. A medium cup of the Blizzard in question has 800 calories and 22 grams of fat! Why? Because it's LOADED with chocolate and sugar, and the portion size is pretty out of control. As far as a swap, I've come up with a good one! It's thick and delicious, and it saves you TONS of fat and calories. Check it out...

HG's Pepped-Up Candy Freeze

PER SERVING (entire recipe): 238 calories, 4g fat, 106mg sodium, 44g carbs, 3.5g fiber, 28g sugars, 5.5g protein -- PointsPlus® value 6*

Ingredients:
1 tsp. Coffee-mate Sugar Free French Vanilla powdered creamer
1/3 cup light vanilla soymilk
1 no-calorie sweetener packet (like Splenda)
1/4 tsp. peppermint extract
1/2 cup Breyers Double Churn Free Creamy Vanilla fat-free ice cream
1/4 cup Cool Whip Free, frozen
3/4 - 1 cup crushed ice or 4 - 8 ice cubes (depending on how thick you want it)
1/2 standard-sized peppermint candy cane, lightly crushed
2 tsp. mini semisweet chocolate chips
Optional: Fat Free Reddi-wip

Directions:
Dissolve creamer in a glass with 2 tbsp. hot water. Add soymilk, sweetener, and peppermint extract, and stir. Transfer to a blender.

Add ice cream, Cool Whip, and ice to the blender, and blend at high speed until just mixed but still thick. (If needed, stop and stir. If it's still too thick to blend, stop and add a tiny bit more soymilk.)

Transfer to a glass and mix in the crushed candy cane and the chocolate chips. Top with Reddi-wip, if you like. YAY!

MAKES 1 SERVING

Enjoy -- and stay warm!
