Total Recall: Keeping Tabs on Your Food

First it was ground beef. Then kid-geared cereals from Kellogg. (The cereals above in "Spotted..." were NOT included in said recall.) Just recently, select cans of Chicken of the Sea solid white tuna in water were recalled due to badly sealed packaging -- FYI, no reports of illness. Now, it's bison meat being called back for possible E. coli contamination -- at least six cases of illness have been reported. Scary stuff. If you want to be in the know on breaking recalls -- food, medicine, cosmetics, and more -- check out Recalls.gov, where six different government agencies report their most recent recall info. You can also sign up for email alerts. And if you have an Android phone, click here to download the new mobile app. We hope Blackberry and iPhone versions are on their way soon... Stay safe, people!
The Buzz...

It's a good news/bad news kind of day... Besides being the butt of comedians' jokes for years ("What's the deal with airplane food?"), it turns out those in-flight meals might be worse than we thought. FDA inspectors recently found (if you're currently eating, you might wanna stop) bugs, bacteria, and more awful stuff in many locations where airline entrées are prepped. Yet another reason to bring your own food. ***Speaking of on-the-go snacks... Looking for a new one? FiberGourmet -- the company behind a slew of delicious, super-high-fiber food items we enjoy -- just debuted Light Wheat Snacks: yummy crackers with half the calories of standard kinds. PLUS, FG has lowered prices on its pastas and single-serving cake mixes and is offering free shipping on orders over $75. Time to stock up! ***Did you know that even the basic raw chicken sold at supermarkets could be full of unnecessary amounts of salt? Chicken breast meat itself has around 70mg sodium per 4-oz. serving, but packaged kinds from some brands have up to FIVE times as much sodium. Do your homework! Read labels and you'll find stuff that doesn't include all the excess salt -- like Foster Farms'. ***HG EVENT ALERT! Our final scheduled cocktail-party/book-signing event is happening THIS Wednesday, 7/14, in St. Louis!!! Join HG (a.k.a. Lisa!) and fellow HGers on the Sky Terrace at the Four Seasons Hotel at 6:30PM. And TOMORROW (Tuesday), tune in to The View on ABC to see Lisa with recipes from Hungry Girl Happy Hour! That's all we've got. Oh yeah, and take our poll! Okay... HG out!
