Gluten-Free-Goodie Alert!

Lately, lots of manufacturers are boasting that their products are gluten-free. Um... it's not impressive when said food is almost always free of gluten. (Gluten-free bagged lettuce! Apple slices with no gluten!) Wheat avoiders: Here are some awesome snack foods we've sniffed out to satisfy your starchy cravings...

Snyder's of Hanover Gluten-Free Pretzel Sticks - No disappointment here! We LOVE this salty, crunchy snack -- partly because we can eat about 20 sticks for 120 cals (PointsPlus® value 3*)!

PopCorners - This crispy cracker-like snack has crunched its way into our hearts. In flavors like White Cheddar and Sea Salt, the yummy corn-based treats ROCK. Each single-serving bag has 140 calories (PointsPlus® value 4*).

New York Style Risotto Chips - We've yet to try these rice-y crisps, but the saucy flavors make us think of pasta... especially the Spicy Marinara! A 9-chip serving has 140 calories (PointsPlus® value 4*).

Cereals and Cake Mixes - Did you know that Chex has five gluten-free cereals, including Honey Nut, Chocolate, and Cinnamon flavors? And although wheat generally prevails in baking mixes, Betty Crocker has gluten-free mixes for cakes, brownies, and cookies. Woohoo!

Let the Good Food Roll! Riding the Food-Truck Trend...

Food trucks are the latest craze in many metro areas -- even Food Network is on board with The Great Food Truck Race. But more often than not, mobile eateries serve items that are SO not HG-friendly. Luckily, we spied a few trucks that have guilt-free offerings...

Green Truck (Los Angeles and NYC) - There are grilled fish tacos, wraps made with flourless tortillas and lavash bread, veggie burgers, grilled chicken salads, and more. We love it!

Sweetflow (MD and Washington DC) - This is one cool truck. It's got fat-free fro yo, hot oatmeal (in the winter), and schmancy salads! Coming soon to VA. YAY!

Sunny Vibrations (San Francisco) - Kale chips, stir-fry items, steamed veggies, soy-meat sandwiches, salads... WOW!

And props to the City of Boston for seeking proposals for healthy mobile food. We think that's wicked smart...
The Buzz...

ARGH! More recall news: Valley Meat Company in Modesto, CA, has recalled about ONE MILLION pounds of frozen ground beef and burger patties due to possible E. coli contamination. Click for more info. ***OK, here's something more positive... For the first time, whole-wheat bread is beating white bread in total U.S. sales. Now that high fiber counts, whole grains, and natural foods are being sought out more frequently, people are less likely to go for the refined white stuff. Heads-up: Not all whole-wheat items are low in calories (read your nutritional labels!), but this is a good start toward eating better. YAAAY! ***Like cooking HG's foil-pack recipes? You might want to try out Reynolds Wrap Non-Stick Aluminum Foil. Apparently, there's no need to use cooking spray or anything; food just doesn't stick to it! Pretty neat. (Click for a coupon!) ***You're probably familiar with all those toning sneakers from MBT, Skechers, etc., that claim to burn extra calories and work you out. Research groups and experts have stepped forward and said there is no evidence to support any of the product claims, and others have said they could even be harmful. Yikes! Now Reebok is releasing exercise clothing that promises to firm you up. Hmmm... That's all we've got. HG out!
