Splenda Hits a Sour Note!

Splenda addicts may be disappointed to learn that it could be a while before new products featuring their favorite calorie-free sweetener hit the shelves.  The sugar substitute has become so popular that its manufacturers are having a hard time keeping up with the demand for it.  Because of this, they won't be cutting new deals with food companies until Splenda production can be doubled at their Alabama plant.  Before you break into a cold sweat, here's what this really means: Your favorite foods that contain Splenda will continue to do so.  And those pretty yellow packets will STILL be available at supermarkets, but companies looking to make new Splenda-sweetened products or switch from aspartame (Equal) will have to wait a while.  On another note, let's hope this does nothing to the already astronomically high prices of the no-cal sweetener.

Too Bad Bunnies are Color Blind...

Bored with orange carrots?  This will be a happy day for you!  Carrots, the popular vegetable known for its bright orange hue, will soon be introduced in a wide array of fashion colors, including dark red, yellow and bright purple!  The new veggies will not only make your salads and side dishes more beauteous, but each color offers a specific nutritional benefit.  Purple carrots owe their purple-tasticness to antioxidants called anthocyanins, and yellow carrots are golden 'cuz of xanthophylls, which have been linked to good eye health.  We're looking forward to striped squash & plaid parsley.

No Pudge! Ice Cream...WOW!

Move over, Skinny Cow!  There's a new svelte farm animal trying to shimmy his way into grocery freezers.  No Pudge! (the fat free brownie-makers with that tape measure-sportin' slim pig mascot) has introduced a whole slew of too-good-to-be-true ice cream treats.  The new line includes sundae cones, cones with brownie chunks, giant chocolate eclairs, oversized fudge bars, strawberry shortcake pops, brownie batter swirl sandwiches, brownie chunk sandwiches and more (that was exhausting)!  These new fiber-packed frozen finds are low in fat and have between 60 and 140 calories each.  If there's any bad news here it's only that these goodies are so new, they're hard to find in stores.  Don't be shy, people!  March into your favorite supermarket (walking is fine, too but it doesn't pack as big a punch) and DEMAND that they carry No Pudge! ice cream.  For more info about No Pudge! frozen novelties, call 1-800-423-2763.

The Ce-real Life

We know two guys who are completely undeterred by the low carb craze.  David Roth and Rick Bacher, the founders of Cereality Cereal Bar & Cafe.  A cereal bar & cafe?  What the heck is THAT?  It's a place that serves up bowls of cereals with toppings, fresh baked cereal bars, cereal parfaits, cereal smoothies and more!  Cereality opened its first sit-down cafe at the University of Pennsylvania last week but has plans to expand BIGTIME.  Their hope is to open more than a dozen Cerealities next year on campuses and in hospital lobbies, airports and office buildings.  These crazy carbmongers have the nerve to serve up Cocoa Puffs, Lucky Charms and Frosted Flakes topped with Pop Rocks, but there are healthier options as well -- like fruit and nut topped oatmeal.  Our advice?  Be VERY careful if you happen to stumble into one of these places.

CHEW ON THIS:
Today, December 6th, is National Gazpacho Day. Gazpacho is a cold soup, great for any season. And not only is it delicious, but it's incredibly low in fat & calories, too! An average serving has less than 50 calories and no fat.
