I hate to admit this but I am obsessed with Twinkies. I'm not prepared to give them up. What are my options, HG?
Twinkie-Obesessed in Toluca Lake
There's no easy way to tell you this. Twinkies are NOT good for you, any way you slice it. The main problem with them isn't even the amount of calories and fat they contain (a regular Twinkie has 150 calories and 5g of fat - 3.5 points). The real issue is what they're made of. You can't even pronounce most of the ingredients. And even if you're good at sounding words out and you can, you're better off not even knowing what's in them. But that being said, there are a few options for you. First off, Hostess does produce a "light" version of the Twinkie, which has 130 calories and 1.5 grams of fat (2.5 points). It's slightly better for you than the original, but not a heck of a lot better. I also found yet another alternative to Twinkies the other day. They're called Mrs. Freshley's SnackAway Yogurt Creme Cakes. They look like Twinkies but are supposed to be better for you. A close look at the label explains more. While they are still packed with plenty of questionable ingredients, they do contain 4g of fiber per cake, and under 1g of sugar. With 140 calories and 1.5g of fat they clock in at 2 points, which isn't bad if you NEED a Twinkie fix. And, look at the bright side, all of the above options are WAY better than indulging in a deep fried Twinkie, which would set you back 361 calories and 28g of fat. YEEEKS!!! But rather than actually EATING Twinkies, try spending some time at twinkiesproject.com. Funny site -- and definitely a healthier option.
Dear Hungry Girl,
I am watching my weight and am forced to eat fast food lunches a lot. I try to stick with plain chicken instead of dealing with salads and confusing menu items. So what I want to know is, which fast food restaurant, in your opinion, has the best tasting chicken breast? I trust your tastebuds and really need to know.
Poultry Lover in Pittsburgh
Dear Poultry Lover,
You're in luck. I've actually spent a lot of time, over the past few months, sampling chicken at many popular fast food chains. There is, without a doubt, a clear, hands down winner. And that winner is...drumroll, please...BURGER KING! BK definitely had the best-tasting chicken of all. It's juicy, flavorful and the texture is fantastic. The WORST chicken award goes to two different restaurants (there's a tie) -- McDonald's (where the chicken is spongy and not really that tasty) and KFC (where it's waaaay too salty and just not that great). The chicken at Wendy's was very good...and even the chicken at Taco Bell was decent, (though they don't serve it as a whole chicken breast, just cut into pieces). But again, if you're looking for the best straight chicken breast option of all -- your best bet is Burger King, for sure. Happy chickening!
CHEW ON THIS: Heads up! Tomorrow, March 30th, is National Turkey Neck Soup Day. Feel free to celebrate with ANY kind of turkey soup (unless it's creamed). Neck meat not required.
