BLTs are one of those things you think have to be off limits, right? Bacon....lettuce...tomato... and MAYO. On bread?! Yikes! Well, don't write off this popular American favorite just yet, because, as usual, Hungry Girl has a solution. Just be a tiny bit smarter about your ingredients, and your BLT will have less than HALF the calories and a fraction of the fat grams your standard, run of the mill BLT has. Check out this swaptastic recipe for HG's Guilt-Free 1-2-3 BLT!
Ingredients: 2 slices of Wonder Light Bread, Weight Watchers Bread (or another 40 calorie bread) 2 slices Louis Rich Turkey Bacon 2 slices of tomato 2 teaspoons of Hellmann's/Best Foods reduced fat mayo 1 romaine lettuce leaf
Directions: Toast your bread. Prepare your bacon in the microwave while bread is toasting. Smear a teaspoon of mayo on each half. Break bacon pieces in half. Assemble your sandwich, using all remaining ingredients -- bacon, lettuce and tomato. Cut in half. Serve with pickles. Yummmmmm!
Bacon sandwiches with veggies and mayo? Who on Earth thought of 'em? And how long have they been around? Food historians say that BLTs, the indulgent, toasted, mayo-infested descendents of club sandwiches, started showing up in cookbooks during the 1920s. And they've grown in popularity ever since. But there's no reason to eat giant hunks of bread, topped with slabs of fatty bacon and oodles of gloppy mayo. What an insult to that innocent lettuce and poor, defenseless tomato! Instead, whip up one of HG's Guilt-Free 1-2-3 BLT creations. THEY ROCK!
CHEW ON THIS: Today, April 18th, is National Animal Crackers Day. Although they are called "crackers", these sweet treats are really cookies and should be eaten in moderation, like all other cookies (or crackers, for that matter).
