A Cookie Catastrophe!
Nana's Big No-No!
Ooops, they did it again! Yet another trusted company has let us down... bigtime. This time the guilty party is Nana's. Apparently Nana is better at baking than she is at math. According to the August issue of Good Housekeeping, Nana's Sunflower Cookie (sold at Whole Foods and other health food stores) really is too good to be true. The label originally claimed that the whole (two serving) cookie had 200 calories, and that number was recently changed to 240 (which many of you emailed us about). But, as it turns out, the lab-happy folks over at the Good Housekeeping Institute had this cookie tested (thanks, GH!), and the results were staggering. Instead of containing 240 calories, it clocked in at 436 calories! And, to make things even worse (if that's possible), it also contained TWICE as much fat as what the label shows. Nana's Oatmeal Raisin cookie is also "posing" as a lower-cal treat. Click here for more gory details (if you dare).
Frappuccinos Get Fruity
When you think "Frappuccino" you probably don't think "fruity," but Starbucks is trying to change that. They've recently added TWO fruit-tastic new Fraps to their lineup. There's the Tangerine Juice Blend Frappuccino, and the Pomegranate Juice Blend Frappuccino. The tangerine is a combo of real tangerine and other fruit juices, mixed with Tazo Passion tea; the Pomegranate is a combo of pomegranate, peach and other juices, blended with Tazo Green Zen tea. BTW, the tangerine one not only tastes better, it's also WAY lower in calories. A "Tall" (12 oz.) only contains 140, as opposed to the 210 calories the 12 oz. pomegranate one packs in. HG Heads Up! When ordering the tangerine, ask your friendly neighborhood barista to use green tea instead of passion tea for a super-refreshing, more tangerine-y (and we think better) beverage.
Frappuccinos Get a Fruity Makeover
New, Cool Stuff!
Dole Fruit Parfaits - These decadent little fruit 'n creme desserts come in three flavors -- Peaches & Creme, Pineapple & Creme and Apples & Caramel Creme. They each contain 110-120 calories and about 2g of fat. We haven't sampled 'em yet, but we will...
New Products From Special K - Special K is everywhere! First it was the cereal, then the snack aisle. Now "The K" will be found in the pharmacy aisle. Kellogg's is launching Special K Protein Waters (in Strawberry Kiwi, Lemon Twist and Tropical Blend), Special K Protein Meal Bars (in Chocolate Peanut Butter, Double Chocolate and Strawberry), and Special K Protein Snack Bars (in Chocolate Peanut and Chocolate Delight). Isn't THAT special?
New Soy/Meat Hybrid "Better Burger" - A St. Louis-based business called The Solae Company has come up with something called a "Better Burger," which is made of a "hybrid" meat part soy, part real meat. This new creation has 1/3 fewer calories and half the fat as a burger of comparable size. Not sure when we'll actually get to taste these though, as they're not in production yet.
A recent study conducted by researchers at UCLA says pomegranates fight cancer. Known to have anti-inflammatory effects and high levels of antioxidants, pomegranates have been used medicinally for thousands of years. Keep an eye out for a new line called Pomology, which features a slew of pomegranate-based supplements. ***If you eat Shedd's Spread Country Crock, you'll be happy to know that it's now completely trans fat free. Weeeeee! ***Three Coca-Cola employees have been charged with stealing company secrets and attempting to sell them to Pepsi. Needless to say, they're in deep fizz now! ***This August, Wendy's will introduce its first-ever VANILLA-flavored Frosty. Keep in mind, though it isn't supposed to be a low-cal item, the Frosty has roughly 27 calories per ounce (which isn't very high at all). In fact, it's right on par with the calorie count of most frozen yogurt. That's all we've got. HG out!
