I really like bread but I try to avoid it at all costs, because it's a "trigger" food for me. That being said, every now and then I need a real sandwich or wrap, as opposed to rolling my lunch meats in lettuce. Any suggestions?
Flour Power
Flour Power,
Sounds like I wrote that question myself. I'm so with you on the bread thing. Luckily, I have found a slew of breads and "bread-y" items that are satisfying for those times when you DO need a sandwich or wrap. In a BBQ pinch, reach for 80-calorie Wonder Light buns (they're harder to find these days but still around!). For wraps, I like to use La Tortilla Factory Whole Wheat Low-Carb/Low-Fat Tortillas (large size). Those have just 80 calories and 14g of fiber. For bagel fixes, I go for Western Bagel's Alternative Bagels -- those have just 110 calories and are packed with fiber. Western Bagel makes GREAT Alternative Pita Bread as well. I'm also a fan of Thomas' Light English Muffins (Multi-Grain) as well as lavash bread. But be sure to find the VERY thin, high-fiber versions (they have about 35 calories a serving). There ya go -- those are my fave bread-ish items!
Dear Hungry Girl,
I love your recipes but I don't use soymilk or Splenda. Can I substitute anything else for those things?
Recipe Queen
Dear Recipe Queen,
Sure you can! If you don't like soymilk, substitute fat-free milk instead. And, you can use whatever low-cal or calorie-free sweetener you like -- stevia, Equal, Sweet 'n Low, etc. I just use Splenda because I think it tastes the best. My recipes are all really simple and very flexible. If I call for a specific brand of something, you can usually find another brand that's comparable nutritionally. I think the brands I write about taste best, but sometimes they're not available, so feel free to substitute away. Click here to see some of my all-time favorite recipes.
