NYC Says Buh-Bye to Trans Fats!
Ok, it's official. New York City's Board of Health has voted to phase out trans fats from restaurants. This may be good news for people who are interested in eating healthier foods, but not-so-good news for the hundreds of donut shops and fast food establishments that'll be forced to start using more costly, better-for-you ingredients. With all the fattening and horrendously bad-for-you stuff that Americans (and certainly NYers) happily consume daily, some find it surprising and random that this ban was approved. And even health-conscious folks are wondering what's next. Will there be a limit to how much sugar you can put in your coffee or how many pints of ice cream you can buy? Take our poll to weigh in on this subject NOW!
Herbs & Spices ROCK!
While most people use herbs and spices to flavor their meals (both home-cooked and prepackaged), few people realize just how good these antioxidant-packed plant foods are for them. Wanna know which are best (of course you do!)? Cloves have the highest antioxidant content, followed by oregano, ginger, cinnamon and turmeric. New studies also show that these herbs and spices may actually BOOST the antioxidant power of other healthy foods, as well. Need more spicy news? Garlic has been credited with reducing cholesterol, and rosemary, lemongrass, basil, mint and parsley are some tasty friends that may aid in the prevention of cancer. Spice things up a bit, willya?!
Jamba Juice recently issued a warning that smoothies purchased in Arizona, Nevada, and Southern California between November 25th and December 1st may have contained strawberries contaminated with potentially deadly bacteria. If you feel you may have purchased one of these smoothies, please call (877) 464-5689. ***A kooky Ukrainian scientist has invented a talking plate that tells you off when the food on your plate starts to weigh too much. Silly? Yes! And it also doesn't do anything for those of us who pile on high-cal foods that don't weigh a lot -- like chips. Still, we want one. Badly. No word yet on when or if it'll be available in the States. ***Keep an eye out for perfectly portioned 100-calorie jerky snacks from our friends at Oberto. These mini bags of dried meats will hit shelves in January. That's all we've got. HG out!
