Churn, Baby, Churn!
Spotted On Shelves
Breyers Double Churn Free - The ice cream wars are heating up. Not to be outdone by their competitors, the folks at Breyers have taken the whole "churning" thing to the next level with their line of fat-free, double-churned ice cream. The nutritionals are super-low on these: For a half-cup serving, it’s 90 calories for the Creamy Vanilla and the French Chocolate, 110 for the Cappuccino Chocolate Chunk and 120 for the Caramel Swirl. And thanks to 3 - 4 grams of fiber per serving, the 90-calorie ones are just 1 Point per serving and the others are only 2! (Psssst... The lower-cal ones are IDEAL for use in frozen drinks and dessert recipes.)
Newman's Own Organics Soy Crisps - Just what the world needs… more soy crisps. OK, that was a little sarcastic -- but these new crunchy treats from Paul and his daughter Nell are delicious. And the Newmans are super-generous! All post-tax profits from these (and all other Newman's Own Organics) goodies go to charity. IMPRESSIVE! Find these crisps in Lightly Salted, Cinnamon Sugar, Barbeque and White Cheddar. They have 110 - 120 calories and 2.5 - 4g fat per 1-oz. serving (2 Points a pop, if you’re counting). Click here for a list of retailers & store locations where Newman’s Own Organics products are sold. BTW, we know it's dorky, but we were actually super-excited to receive a hand-written note from Nell herself!
Miller Chill - Ooooh, just in time for summer, it's a new light beer. This is Miller's version of a Mexican Chelada, which is an ice-cold beer served with a hint of lime and a touch of salt. Each 12-oz. bottle clocks in at 110 calories (2 Points), which is a tad high compared to some other light beers, but not at all bad for an alcoholic beverage.
BBQ time is here! And we wanna help...
Get Saucy! OK -- get this. These special gourmet sauces (great for grilling) from d'Oni are good for you, all-natural, preservative-free, and taste FANTASTIC! All of them ROCK, but our fave is the Bold as Love Honey-Habanero-Mustard. And their Moondance Marinade is worth a mention too. Hmmm, so is their What's Goin' On Soy-Pear-Ginger Korean Teriyaki. Guess we like them all. Here's the best part -- they each have less than 10 calories per teaspoon and are fat-free! And Janis (the very nice and generous gal behind 'em) is offering 20% off if you use discount code hungrygirl at checkout on her site. Find these at select specialty stores or order online.
Meals on Wheels - If you love to grill so much you wanna do it EVERYWHERE, nab one of these Full-Sized Travel Grills from Hammacher Schlemmer. This propane grill folds into a little roll-y suitcase and can go anywhere with you. Weeeeee!
BBQing Goes to Your Waist - This barbeque belt organizer may not be the most fashionable waist-wear we've seen, but it has little holders for tongs, a spatula, seasonings, sauces and even BEER (or your beverage of choice). Snazzy!
Cool Stuff We Found!
Build a Burger to Win $25,000 - We know we usually push their salads, but we wanted to tip you off to something fun that Wendy's is up to. Design a brand-new burger for them, and you could win $25,000. We recommend going guilt-free with lots of veggies and maybe a pineapple ring. If your burger is chosen as the winner, you’ll win 25 grand and a chance for your creation to appear on the Wendy's menu. WOWEE! Click here for the details and official rules. And good luck!
MapMyRun.com - Want to know exactly how far you're running (or, um, walking)? Check out this new site that enables you to use Google Maps to plot your routes. It's fun and easy to use, and now you'll be able to see exactly how much mileage you’re racking up. And don't worry if you're walking (even slowly), as opposed to running or jogging. Any movement from one place to another without the use of some sort of help (be it a car, bus or your muscled neighbor Larry) is good for you!
A recent study found that eating pistachios may reduce your body's response to everyday stresses.Click here to read more about the study, and here to read about our favorite pistachios. ***It's official! By the end of 2007, all U.S. Starbucks locations will have switched from whole milk to 2% milk as the default add-in in all of their espresso-based drinks (don’t worry, you can still special order your milk of choice). Hooray for The 'Bucks! ***Skin is in, and here’s a story to prove it. The skin of an apple may be a more powerful cancer-fighter than the flesh of the fruit. Cornell researchers have identified a dozen cancer-fighting compounds called triterpenoids found in apple peel. So stop peeling those apples, people! ***If you're a fan of foods from Amy's Kitchen (as you probably know, we are obsessed with the organic food makers!), you may be happy to learn that their brand-new Kids Meals are hitting shelves this month. Keep an eye out for 'em. That's all we've got. HG out!
