It's so annoying when a product tries to appear "light" or "healthy" when clearly it's NOT. Or when something as seemingly innocent as a bottle of WATER contains almost as many calories as can of regular Coke. Read on for the full 411!
TRAITOR JOE STRIKES AGAIN
Trader Joe's Veggie Chips (Potato Snacks)
PER SERVING (about 26 chips, 1 oz.): 160 calories, 10g fat, 240mg sodium, 16g carbs, 1g fiber, 0g sugars, 1g protein -- POINTS® value 4*
At first glance, you'd probably think these Veggie Chips are a great alternative to potato chips, right? The package shows giant red tomatoes and leafy green spinach. At the very least, they must contain some good-for-you veggies... right?!? WRONG! After potato, oil, and salt on the ingredients list, you'll find "tomato powder" and "spinach powder" listed as the only veggie-related items. Spinach powder!? Don't be fooled by these glorified greasy potato chips.
LITE DONE WRONG
Ken's Steak House Dressing, Lite Raspberry Walnut Vinaigrette
PER SERVING (2 tbsp.): 80 calories, 6g fat, 120mg sodium, 7g carbs, 0g fiber, 6g sugars, 0g protein -- POINTS® value 2*
We hate to out you like this, Ken, especially since we love SOME of your light dressings. But the people NEED to know. We can handle the fact that your Lite Chunky Blue Cheese and Lite Creamy Caesar dressings have dozens of calories and too many fat grams per tablespoon, but we're not so forgiving with this fruity vinaigrette. Especially considering the fact that all the other vinaigrettes in the Lite lineup have much lower stats than this one. We've said it before and we'll say it again -- ALWAYS read labels carefully on "light" salad dressings!
BAD NEWS BARS
ThinkThin Bars, Assorted Flavors
PER SERVING (1 bar): 240 calories, 7 - 8g fat, 115 - 260mg sodium, 25 - 27g carbs, 1 - 2g fiber, 0g sugars, 20g protein -- POINTS® value 5*
This company has a slew of "Think" bar lines, including ThinkGreen and ThinkOrganic. The odd thing about these particular skinny-sounding ones is that they're higher in calories & fat than almost all the bars in those other lines! Most of the offerings in the Green and Organic lines have only 150 - 180 calories and 5 - 7g fat! True, the ThinkThin bars are slightly larger than the others. But why oh why would they choose to make the THIN bars BIGGER and higher in calories?!? They may be protein-packed and all-natural, but don't be duped into thinking one of these diet-friendly posers is a low-cal, low-fat choice (it's not). You're better off grabbing one of these HG faves (pssst -- they taste better, too!)...
Glacéau VitaminWater, Assorted Flavors
PER SERVING (8 oz.): 50 calories, 0g fat, 0mg sodium, 13g carbs, 0g fiber, 13g sugars, 0g protein -- POINTS® value 1*
Those stats might not seem shocking, but this is WATER, people! And FYI, each standard-sized 20-ouncer contains 2.5 servings, so you'll be swallowing 125 calories (POINTS® value 3*) with a bottle of this water! We're not totally opposed to spending a couple of calories on some really good fruit-flavored or protein-packed water. But a bottle with a calorie count in the triple digits is silly. FYI, you might wanna avoid SoBe Life Water as well. That agua's got 100 cals per bottle. Crazy times...
