Hungry Girl,

I have a birthday party coming up, and I want to offer yummy, guilt-free
snacks, appetizers, and even cocktails. What are your favorites?

B-Day Girl

Dear B-Day Girl,

First of all, HAPPY BIRTHDAY (and where's the party?)! There are SOOOOO
many fun and fantastic foods you can make and serve to your guests, but
I'm going to stick with the ones that will absolutely fool ALL of your pals into
thinking they are eating totally fattening stuff. Here are my picks for you:

1. De-Pudged Pigs in a Blanket - An instant HG classic. These please
everyone. Always.

2. Sassy Southwestern Roll-Ups - I think these little egg rolls are better than
the version Chili's serves. FANTASTIC party food!

3. Rockin' Restaurant Spinach Dip - Here's another great one. Serve it with
low-fat tortilla or pita chips. Again, as good as (if not better than!) the full-fat
version. Yum!

4. Ooey Gooey Chili Cheese Nachos - Nachos make a party more fun. These
are very decadent -- but not fatty or greasy in any way.

5. Magical Low-Calorie Margaritas - These are incredible and have a fraction
of the calories of regular margaritas. You'll never go back! I serve these at
all of my parties, and everyone loves them.

6. Red Velvet Insanity Cupcakes - These are a great alternative to birthday
cake. They're delicious, gorgeous, and portion-controlled. But if you wanna
stick to a traditional cake on your b-day, go ahead and splurge.

Do you think someone should tell their friends if what they're about to order
or eat is filled with fat and calories? Or should we just mind our own business
when it comes to other people's food?

Friends with a Food Fiend

Dear Friends with,

That's an excellent question. In my opinion, you should ONLY tell your friends
that what they're ordering is packed with calories and fat if they ask for your
advice about food. A lot of people are VERY sensitive about this stuff, and if
you start telling them what to eat or not eat, it could cause huge fights or just
make your pals feel very uncomfortable. I know your intentions are good,
but it can be very off-putting to people when a friend judges their meals and
tells them they're making bad choices. There are, however, some exceptions
to this rule. If a close family member (a parent, child, sibling, or spouse) has
a specific medical condition and needs to avoid certain foods (like if your
husband has extremely high cholesterol and is constantly ordering regular
eggs and bacon), I think it can be okay to give them a gentle reminder about
their choices every now and then. Telling someone you love them and want
them to be around for a long time is often a good way to couch this. But
unless the circumstances are extreme and involve people you are very close
with, it's probably best not to comment. Telling your work friend that her
happy hour cheesy potato skins and ginormous frozen margarita will total a
full day's worth of calories and way too much fat = a bad idea. Trust me! If
you want to share guilt-free food knowledge with friends without offending
them, you can always forward some fun HG recipes and shocker emails to
them. :)
