Hungry Girl Today: 12.12.08
Today's finds are a tiny bit tricky to locate but worth the effort...
A.C. LaRocco Ultra Thin Sprouted Grain Bruschetta Style Pizza
PER SERVING (1/2 pizza): 170 calories, 8g fat, 290mg sodium, 17g carbs, 3g
fiber, 0g sugars, 11g protein -- POINTS® value 3*
Guilt-free frozen pizza is tough to get right. While there are MANY options for
reduced-calorie pizzas, too many of them waste calories and starchy carbs
on crust that's just too thick. Why do it? WHY???!!! A.C. LaRocco has the right
idea with this pizza. It's not just thin crust, it's ULTRA thin crust (that's thinner
than thin!) -- it's almost like a tortilla, but with a slightly sweet, wheaty taste.
Simply put, this pizza is FANTASTIC. It tastes fresh, like you made it yourself
at home. A.C. LaRocco makes all kinds of great pizzas in various flavors with
different crusts, and all have stats that are pretty impressive. Just check the
boxes for specific calorie and fat counts -- and read VERY carefully because
some of their pizzas have two servings and others have three. The
Bruschetta Style -- a tomato-topped, garlic-packed 2-serving pie -- is our
absolute favorite. (And we taste-tasted a SLEW of them!) These pizzas are
not available at every market in the U.S., but they do have pretty good
distribution and can be found at various Whole Foods, Wild Oats, Fred Meyer,
Albertsons, Publix, Kroger, and more locations. (Pssst... Look for them in the
natural food freezer.) Click here to see where they're sold in your area. (We
recommend calling first to make sure the store has 'em in stock.)
The Bottom Line: Great pizza. One of the best-kept secrets of the guilt-free
food world. FIND IT!
Buzz Bites Chocolate Energy Chews
PER SERVING (1 piece): 25 calories, 1g fat, 20mg sodium, 4g carbs, 0g fiber,
3g sugars, 0g protein -- POINTS® value 1*
We were skeptical when these things showed up at our offices. And, truth be
told, we weren't fans right off the bat. For starters, caffeine-infused candy is
somewhat scary. (Buzz Bites contain a lot of the same stuff you find in
energy drinks like Red Bull.) And it's not something we generally seek out,
but we figured we'd give these chews a whirl. About the size of a small
caramel cube, and similar in consistency without the "stretch" (think a very
soft, square Tootsie Roll), there are pros and cons to these Bites. First, the
cons. They're pretty bitter. You can taste the chocolate, for sure, but every
now and then you get a HUGE burst of bitterness from the caffeine, and it's
not so pleasant. So bitter-haters BEWARE. Another con -- IT'S CAFFEINE-
LOADED CANDY. So if you're sensitive to caffeine, watch out. Now, for the
pros. These Chews are fairly chocolatey, they taste pretty good, they can
kick a chocolate craving for 25 calories, they give you a little caffeine buzz
(like a small cup of coffee), and they're not SO good you'll gobble down a
whole bunch at once (that would be bad!). They really grow on you. We've
found ourselves chewing through these pretty quickly at the HG HQ, so it
would be hypocritical of us to say we don't like them, because we actually
do. By the way, they come in a Mint Chocolate flavor, too, but the regular
ones are WAY better. Look for 'em at select stores, or buy online.
The Bottom Line: They're not for everyone, but if you're curious,
adventurous, and often a little sleepy, they're worth a chew.
Sensible Portions 100 Calorie Packs Cheating with Chocolate Mini Crisps,
PER SERVING (1 bag): 100 calories, 3g fat, 120mg sodium, 16g carbs, 1g
fiber, 7g sugars, 2g protein -- POINTS® value 2*
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, AMAZING FIND ALERT!!!! We want to start out by
giving props to Sensible Portions. This company first started dabbling in the
world of mini crisps drizzled with chocolate back in late 2005. The folks at
Quaker didn't release their Mini Delights until early 2007, so the Sensible
Portions folks really are the innovators in that space. That being said, there's
certainly room for all of the delicious chocolate-topped minis in our guilt-free-
food-loving hearts. We love you all -- Mwah! Mwah! (FYI, those are real
kisses, not air kisses.) These come in ginormous boxes that contain 26
individual bags (two flavors) and will soon be available at club stores, so
they're money-savers. And while the S'mores flavor is also great
(marshmallowy and chocolatey!), the Cinna-Swirl ones are TOO INSANELY
GOOD FOR WORDS. Honestly, biting into one of these is like being punched
in the face with deliciousness. (We stole that line from a friend.) The crisps
have a light, sweet cinnamon flavor, and they are drizzled with creamy white
chocolate. You get about 22 crisps in each portion-controlled bag. Definitely a
FANTASTIC way to spend 100 calories! Buy 'em online (for now), and look
for them in stores soon!
The Bottom Line: You have to taste this find to fully understand. A MUST-
HAVE for anyone who likes cinnamon and/or white chocolate.

CHEW ON THIS:
Friday, December 12th, is National Ambrosia Day. In Greek mythology,
ambrosia is the food and drink of the gods. In current times, ambrosia is
commonly served in salad form and made from fruit, mini marshmallows,
and sour cream. Big difference.
