Hungry Girl Today: 4.30.09
Last time we reviewed a SLEW of frozen entrées, you LOVED it and asked for
more. However, many of you pointed out that frozen meals often contain
high amounts of sodium. Yep, you're right -- so if you count sodium, check
the nutritionals carefully and skip the ones that are too high for you (and
check out last week's low-sodium email). Now, here's our latest Chew & Tell!
New from Healthy Choice
Healthy Choice Fire Roasted Tomato Chicken
PER SERVING (One 11.7-oz. meal): 320 calories, 5g fat, 560mg sodium, 48g
carbs, 7g fiber, 20g sugars, 19g protein -- POINTS® value 6*
Way to go, Healthy Choice! You've REALLY improved the look (and, in most
cases, the taste!) of your meals. The packaging is WAY better now. (And we
LOVE the new ad campaign with Julia Louis-Dreyfus.) The chicken in this dish
is really tender and delicious, and the sauce is creamy! This one also comes
with a very sweet apple-cranberry dessert that tastes like the holidays.
The Bottom Line: We'd eat this regularly!
Healthy Choice All Natural Sweet Asian Potstickers
PER SERVING (One 10-oz. meal): 380 calories, 4.5g fat, 600mg sodium, 75g
carbs, 6g fiber, 19g sugars, 8g protein -- POINTS® value 7*
Nothing special here. Too carby for us, and not enough food. Three
potstickers -- and they're filled with a lame amount of veggies and MORE
STARCH (which is weird). The sauce is sweet and good, but this dish comes
with too much rice. More protein, please!
The Bottom Line: We've seen the last of you, Sweet Asian Potstickers.
Healthy Choice All Natural Portabella Spinach Parmesan
PER SERVING (One 9.4-oz. meal): 270 calories, 7g fat, 600mg sodium, 40g
carbs, 5g fiber, 2g sugars, 11g protein -- POINTS® value 5*
Impressive! Mostly because we can actually taste the mushrooms and the
touch of olive oil here. Although, we wouldn't mind some more veggies. Good
stats, too. Heads up: Although meat isn't a main ingredient, this one isn't
The Bottom Line: We wish it had a little more spinach to fill it out... but this
one's a keeper.
A Must-Chew Courtesy of Kashi
Kashi Mayan Harvest Bake
PER SERVING (One 10-oz. entrée): 340 calories, 9g fat, 380mg sodium, 58g
carbs, 8g fiber, 19g sugars, 9g protein -- POINTS® value 7*
Um, we have something to declare here, people. Ahem... THIS MAY BE THE
BEST-TASTING FROZEN MEAL OF ALL TIME!!!! There, we said it. Plantains,
pumpkin seeds, sweet potatoes, insane grains, and the BEST smoky-sweet
sauce ever make this entrée ridiculously delicious and completely unique. We
are in love.
The Bottom Line: There are no words to describe how good this meal is. And
it's filling. Kashi, we're at a loss for words. (But we are working on an
interpretive dance to express our gratitude for this meal!)
The Latest from Lean Cuisine
Lean Cuisine Linguine Carbonara
PER SERVING (One 9.25-oz. package): 300 calories, 8g fat, 590mg sodium,
43g carbs, 2g fiber, 4g sugars, 14g protein -- POINTS® value 6*
Oh, nice creamy sauce. This one isn't bad but is SCREAMING for a bag of
frozen veggies to be added to it. There's enough sauce to go around, so no
The Bottom Line: If you're craving carbonara, here's your answer.
Lean Cuisine Beef Chow Fun
PER SERVING (One 9-oz. package): 320 calories, 5g fat, 520mg sodium, 54g
carbs, 3g fiber, 18g sugars, 15g protein -- POINTS® value 6*
OMG. This entrée is INCREDIBLE. It has about seven strips of beef, a
deliciously sweet citrusy sauce, chewy noodles, and a whole lot of flavor. It
could use more veggies -- a ginormous handful of steamed snow peas would
make this meal even better.
The Bottom Line: This one's being put into regular rotation.
Lean Cuisine Pasta Romano with Bacon
PER SERVING (One 10-oz. package): 280 calories, 7g fat, 650mg sodium,
43g carbs, 4g fiber, 8g sugars, 12g protein -- POINTS® value 5*
Um, LC, we're not huge fans of this. Your other new entrées are way more
impressive. The bacon is... odd-tasting (a little like Band-Aids -- a.k.a.
adhesive strips). Sorry.
The Bottom Line: We'll be skipping this one in the future.
Lean Cuisine Five Cheese Rigatoni
PER SERVING (One 11.5-oz. package): 330 calories, 9g fat, 690mg sodium,
50g carbs, 4g fiber, 10g sugars, 12g protein -- POINTS® value 7*
The sweet tomato sauce and overly delicious cheesiness of this entrée help
you forget that it looks nothing like the picture on the box. A good deal for
330 calories. We like it and recommend tossing in a few shrimp to add some
more protein and tastiness.
The Bottom Line: If you try really hard, you just might be able to identify all
five cheeses. We did.
Lean Cuisine Sun-Dried Tomato Pesto Chicken
PER SERVING (One 8.625-oz. package): 290 calories, 9g fat, 570mg sodium,
34g carbs, 4g fiber, 10g sugars, 18g protein -- POINTS® value 6*
WOWOWOW, Lean Cuisine. You did a great job with this one! Lots of chicken
(about six chunky hunks!), great sun-dried tomato taste, and FUN-SHAPED
pasta that isn't soggy or limp at all.
The Bottom Line: We love it but it's a little light on veggies. So we're still
getting this one again SOON, we'll just be adding extra veggies to it.
