Hungry Girl Today: 6.26.09
Many high-calorie foods are easy to identify. (Bucket of fried chicken?
DING!) But what we find SUPER-SCARY are the items that sound healthy and
innocent yet are anything but. Here's our latest list of offenders. And yes, we
really ARE offended...
Applebee's Grilled Shrimp 'N Spinach Salad
PER SERVING (full-size salad with dressing:) 1,160 calories -- POINTS®
value of at least 22*
This is one of those salads where you really have to read the fine print and
check the ingredients. If you picked this salad by name alone, you'd think
you were making a wise choice. However, there's lots of bacon hiding in that
pile o' greens... and there's even more bacon in the dressing! But even with
all that bacon, it's hard to believe how many calories this thing has. Yikes.
Friendly's Garden Omelette
PER SERVING (omelette and orange slice; no sides): 860 calories, 55g fat,
1,170mg sodium, 52g carbs, 5g fiber, 40g protein -- POINTS® value 21*
Attention, information fiends: Friendly's nutritional stats are now posted
online! One of the most shocking sets of numbers we stumbled upon? The
stats for this simple veggie omelette. What's worse is the fact that the nearly
900-calorie price tag does NOT include the "golden home fries and toast" it's
served with. Add those in and you're looking at 1,350 - 1,490 calories and
77 - 79g fat (POINTS® value 33 - 36*), depending on your bread choice.
Ruby Tuesday Veggie Burger
PER SERVING (entire meal): 952 calories, 53g fat, 95g net carbs, 3g fiber --
POINTS® value 23*
Granted, most of RT's burgers are members of the 1,000-calorie+ club, but
that's no excuse for a veggie burger to be this high in calories. Served with
(eeks!) endless fries, we doubt these stats cover refills. Each serving of the
fries has 359 calories and 13g fat, so the potential harm here is brutal.
Thanks, but no thanks, Ruby T.
Baja Fresh Cabo Style Salad Burrito
PER SERVING (one burrito): 980 calories, 52g fat, 1770mg sodium, 81g
carbs, 11g fiber, 50g protein -- POINTS® value 23*
One would think that an item referred to as a "Salad Burrito" would be a
pretty light choice. WRONG-O! Rumor has it this thing has THREE kinds of
cheese, ranch dressing, AND avocado. Yeah, that'll weigh a burrito down.
Jamba Juice Orange Dream Machine Smoothie
PER SERVING (one original-size smoothie): 490 calories, 2g fat, 210mg
sodium, 105g carbs, <1g fiber, 99g sugars, 10g protein -- POINTS® value
WHOA!!! There are almost 100 grams of sugar in this smoothie! That's more
than the amount in two cans of regular soda. If you're looking for a
refreshing treat, maybe you should seek out something else. From our time
spent checking out the Sugar Stacks website, we can deduce that this
smoothie has about 25 cubes' worth of sugar. Yuck.
Haagen-Dazs Mango Ice Cream
PER SERVING (1/2 cup): 250 calories, 14g fat, 50mg sodium, 28g carbs, <1g
fiber, 27g sugars, 4g protein -- POINTS® value 6*
It's easy to be lured into thinking that fruity ice cream could be a guilt-free
treat. And while a scoop of Haagen-Dazs' Mango SORBET makes a nice light
dessert (120 calories, no fat, and a POINTS® value of 2*), don't mess up
and buy the ICE CREAM by accident. This stuff is full-fat and has more than
twice as many calories per serving. SUPER lame.
