Sodium Slim Down! How Low Can You Go?

As far as food trends go, low-sodium seems to be the hot thing these days.
One of our new friends in the fight against high sodium levels? AlsoSalt!

Last week, we served up some of the most explicitly offensive stats from
CSPI's 2010 Xtreme Eating Awards. So this week, we've got new restaurant
items you can chew without fear. Read on...

Applebee's Pick 'N Pair Lunch Combo: Asian Crunch Salad with Chicken
Tortilla Soup - Match this new salad with the Mexican-inspired soup, and
you'll have a satisfying meal for 380 calories and 11.5g fat. YAY! As for other
good options on the weekday Pick 'N Pair lineup? The Black Bean and
Chicken Noodle soups and the Grilled Shrimp 'N Spinach Salad. (Heads up:
Make sure one of these soups is the Soup of the Day.)

Romano's Macaroni Grill Aged Beef Tenderloin Spiedini - We really like those
rosemary skewers they've got going on over there, and the folks at the Grill
have released a couple of new versions. We love this lean beef option -- only
410 calories and 12g fat, including the roasted veggies. There's also a
Center-Cut Lamb one with 500 cals and 24g fat. Not bad!

Ruby Tuesday Crab Cake Dinner and Barbecue Grilled Chicken - We found
TWO guilt-free newbies at Ruby Tues'... BUT they require a little swapping in
the sides department. Skip the heavy succotash and cheesy mashies, and
choose two from steamed broccoli, sugar snap peas, and sautéed
portabellas. Then your crab cake meal will have about 465 calories and 28g
fat, and the entire chicken dinner will have just around 515 calories and 14g
fat!

TCBY Ruby Red Grapefruit Frozen Sorbet and Butter Pecan Frozen Yogurt -
Two AMAZING-sounding seasonal items from the classic fro yo joint. The
sorbet has 100 calories and no fat per 1/2-cup serving, and the Butter Pecan
soft-serve has only 120 calories and 2g fat in half a cup. Enjoy, but watch
those portion sizes...

of charge -- to people affected by life-threatening illnesses. Do good things,
and you might GET good things... like a chance to hang out and chew items
with us! ***According to new research, coffee drinkers may have a disease-
fighting edge. A study recently published in the Journal of Agricultural and
Food Chemistry found that coffee helped improve insulin sensitivity and
reduce the risk of high blood sugar in lab mice. This means java-drinking
humans could be at lower risk for developing diabetes -- as long as that joe
isn't loaded with sugar! ***Want another way to decrease your likelihood of
getting diabetes? Eat brown rice. Researchers in Boston recently announced
these findings: Among nearly 200,000 subjects, consumption of more white
rice was linked to a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, while a high
intake of brown rice was associated with a lower risk. Whole-grain stuff is
better for us, anyway, so eat it (in moderation, of course)! ***Big week
