Chili Three Ways: Canned, Frozen, and On the Go!
Here are a few of our favorite finds...
Amy's Organic Black Bean Chili
PER SERVING (1 cup): 200 calories, 3g fat, 680mg sodium, 31g carbs, 13g fiber, 3g sugars, 13g protein -- PointsPlus® value 4*
This is one of those classic items from Amy's -- it rocks! With so much BEAN-tasticness (the fiber! the protein!), it's hard NOT to love it. Even the label is beautiful -- just look at that gorgeous shade of purple!
Tabatchnick Organic Vegetarian Chili
PER SERVING (1 pouch): 180 calories, 3.5g fat, 360mg sodium, 28g carbs, 8g fiber, 3g sugars, 12g protein -- PointsPlus® value 4*
This one's found in the FREEZER aisle, people! Just defrost a pouch in the microwave, empty it into a bowl, and eat. This chili is totally low in calories and sodium, high in fiber, and SUPER convenient for a quick mini meal. Tabatchnick... you're difficult to pronounce but SO easy to love.
PER SERVING (1 cup): 140 calories, 3.5g fat, 630mg sodium, 15g carbs, 3g fiber, 3g sugars, 12g protein -- PointsPlus® value 3*
If you're out and about, this is a GREAT find. A cup of it paired with, say, a Roadhouse Steak Sammie (220 calories, 6g fat) makes a pretty nice lunch. Or get a bowl of the chili for only 230 calories, 6g fat, and 6g fiber... and a packet of those crackers to go with it (only 45 calories -- why not?).
Not all chili is your friend. Look out for these scary versions...
The Cheesecake Factory White Chicken Chili
PER SERVING (1 order): 880 calories, 13g sat. fat, 2,124mg sodium, 67g carbs, fiber n.a., sugars n.a., protein n.a. -- PointsPlus® value of at least 21*
It's CHILI... with CHICKEN. What on EARTH is going on here?! For one thing, the heap of white rice that it's "garnished" with doesn't help. Plus, the chili itself is creamy, which is a sure sign of disaster. And take note: The amount of fat given is SATURATED fat only. (CF doesn't provide total fat counts.) Eeeks!
Steak 'n Shake Genuine Chili
PER SERVING (1 bowl): 880 calories, 47g fat, 2,030mg sodium, 75g carbs, 19g fiber, 3g sugars, 40g protein -- PointsPlus® value 22*
Basically, this is plain ol' chili -- beefy, bean-y, fatty chili. And if you order it "deluxe," you'll have 1,220 calories and 74g fat sitting in front of you. Even the littler cup of this stuff packs in 440 calories. Silly chili!
Stagg Classic Chili With Beans
PER SERVING (1 cup): 330 calories, 17g fat, 820mg sodium, 28g carbs, 5g fiber, 7g sugars, 17g protein -- PointsPlus® value 9*
Most people just empty a can of chili into a bowl and call it a serving -- are we right? Well, like most packaged chili, this has about two servings per container. And consuming two servings of this crazy chili would result in swallowing down around 35 fat grams and over 600 calories. From PACKAGED CHILI?! It's not even restaurant stuff... not the amazing homemade kind... no toppings or anything! SO not worth it.
