ASK HUNGRY GIRL

Hi HG,

I have a couple of Qs for you. I've noticed that in your recipes that call for ground meat, you call for extra-lean ground beef but lean ground turkey. Why is that? Also, sometimes I see ground meat with seemingly decent stats that isn't actually labeled as "lean" or "extra-lean." How do I know what's what? Thanks!

Meat Me at the Market

Hi Meat Me,

Those are excellent questions. The reason we tend to call for lean ground turkey is that the extra-lean kind can be dry and tasteless. And since lean turkey is still pretty reasonable in terms of nutritionals, I think it's worth it. Extra-lean ground beef, on the other hand, isn't as dry, and it works really well in HG recipes. As for the second part of your email, here's the 411. Officially (according to USDA and FDA regulations), a 3.5-oz. serving of any lean meat needs to contain 10 grams of fat or less, and a serving of extra-lean meat has to have 5 grams of fat or less. (If the serving size on the package is greater than 3.5 oz., that weight needs to meet the same exact requirements.) When it comes to lean turkey, look for one with about 160 calories and 8g fat per 4-oz. serving. You can also look for those touting 7% fat or less. Jennie-O and Foster Farms have versions that fit the bill. For extra-lean ground beef, find some that has around 140 calories and 4.5g fat per 4-oz. serving. Laura's 96% Lean Ground Round and 96% Lean Ground Sirloin are our picks at the HG HQ. Hope this answer helps you. Happy chewing!

Hi Hungry Girl,

I am VERY excited about your new TV show. I even changed my cable plan to make sure I get Cooking Channel. My question is this: Will the show be a straight-up cooking show, where you demo recipes in the kitchen the whole time, or will there be other fun stuff as well? Either way, I'll be tuning in!

Setting-My-TiVo Tracey

Hi Tracey!

I, too, am VERY excited for the launch of the show on January 8th. I had so much fun filming it and can't wait for the HG fans to see it. To answer your Q, the show is NOT confined to the kitchen. There will be trips to the supermarket for shopping tips, TOP ATE food finds, restaurant visits for survival strategies and special HG-friendly orders, and more fun in-the-field pieces. I'll also answer fan questions, entertain a special guest (here's a hint: he's cute and he can eat a LOT!), divulge poll results, and more. OF COURSE, I will be whipping up no-guilt recipes -- for HG favorites as well as all-new creations -- in my snazzy and super-cute HG-ified kitchen. There are some really fun (and funny!) surprises as well. I truly think that the HG subscribers AND people who are new to the Hungry Girl world will absolutely love it. BTW, if you missed the behind-the-scenes video, click here now to see it! And tell all your friends (yes, ALL!) to tune in (or set their DVRs) for the premiere episode on Saturday, January 8th, at 4pm ET/1pm PT on Cooking Channel. Woohoo!
