Spotted on Shelves...
Blue Diamond Baked Nut Chips - There's a new chip alternative hitting shelves, and this one is gluten-free, wheat-free, AND guilt-free! These crispy chips are made from brown rice and almonds and are dusted with classic chip seasonings -- Nacho, Sour Cream & Chive, and Sea Salt. A serving of 14 - 15 chips has 130 calories, 3.5 - 4.5g fat, 160 - 210mg sodium, 21- 22g carbs, 1g fiber, 0 - 1g sugars, and 3g protein (PointsPlus® value 3 - 4*). Click here to track 'em down -- they aren't nationwide yet, but you can get them online.
Crystal Light Pure - Remember Pure Fitness, the all-natural, low-calorie drink mixes from Crystal Light? Well, CL's dropped Fitness from the name and added more flavor options! Tropical Blend and Mixed Berry are the newbies, and Lemonade has replaced Lemon Lime. Each serving, which is half a packet, has 15 calories, 10 - 35mg sodium, 3 - 4g carbs, and 3 - 4g sugars (PointsPlus® value 0*). No artificial sweeteners... just PURE FLAVOR!
Lean Cuisine Market Creations Chicken Pot Stickers and Chicken Poblano - New Lean Cuisine goodies? SCORE! We're big fans of LC's Market Creations steam-in-the-bag meals, so we can't WAIT to get our teeth on these. The pot stickers come in a sweet chili ginger soy sauce with edamame and veggies; the other is a pasta dish with veggies, beans, a chili-cheese sauce, and (of course) chicken. Each meal has 270 - 300 calories, 5 - 6g fat, 640 - 750mg sodium, 40 - 42g carbs, 5g fiber, 7 - 16g sugars, and 11 - 24g protein (PointsPlus® value 7*).

Menu Labeling Update! Where Calorie Counts May Be Headed Next...
After last year's healthcare regulations resulted in calorie counts popping up on menus in certain areas, we've all been eagerly awaiting what's to come on a national level. Recently, the FDA announced its latest proposals. The first proposed regulation states that restaurant chains and food establishments with 20 or more locations would have to post calorie counts on all menus, menu boards, drive-thrus, and food displays. We like that part, but we're bummed out to hear that movie theaters, airlines, and other establishments whose main purposes aren't food sales would NOT have to comply. BOO! The second regulation applies to vending machines, stating that operators with 20 or more machines have to post calorie info (unless the stats on product packaging are visible from within the machine). That'd certainly be a huge help! What do you think of all this? Wanna make your opinions known? The FDA is taking public comments on the proposed rules -- until June 6th for the menu labeling and until July 5th for the vending machine labeling. The final rules will come down before the end of this year, with enforcement likely to begin in the summer of next year. YAY for nationwide calorie info!
The Buzz...
Recall alert! Jennie-O, purveyors of tasty turkey products, is recalling about 55,000 pounds of frozen lean turkey burgers due to possible salmonella contamination. Yikes! Click here for details, and always remember to fully cook poultry products to prevent food-borne illnesses. ***Ready for some unexpected good news? According to new research, candy and chocolate chewers tend to have lower BMIs, smaller waists, and fewer risk factors for cardiovascular disease than those who don't indulge. Experts suspect this may have something to do with regular consumers of candy being good at balancing their calorie intake and output. We need to take a jelly bean break now... ***A mainstream low-calorie margarita? YES way, Jose! The people behind super-popular tequila Jose Cuervo are launching their Authentic Light Margarita -- a ready-to-drink cocktail with less than 100 calories a serving. P.S. A non-alcoholic "Zero Calorie" Margarita Mix is also on the way. YES! ***We appreciate it when food vendors try to go guilt-free, but sometimes they don't quite get it. Planet Smoothie just announced its new Planet Light line -- more than 20 smoothies with less than 300 calories each. And that's nice, but WHY are smoothies ever over 300 calories to begin with?! ***Bad news for fast-food places with coffee drinks: Research shows that while a person's blood sugar spikes after a fatty meal, the spike DOUBLES when the fatty meal is combined with caffeinated coffee. Adding the coffee could cause one's blood sugar to reach levels akin to those of people at risk for diabetes. Eeeks! And that's all we've got. HG out!
