Spotted on Shelves...

Healthy Choice Top Chef Inspired Café Steamers - For the home cook who dreams of eating competition-level food but doesn't have the Quickfire skills to back it up... These freezer-aisle meals sound great! There are eight fun options -- we're dreaming about the Barbecue Seasoned Steak with Red Potatoes! Each meal has 230 - 330 calories, 2.5 - 9g fat, 420 - 600mg sodium, 28 - 47g carbs, 3 - 7g fiber, 2 - 15g sugars, and 6 - 22g protein (PointsPlus® value 5 - 8*). Keep those you like in rotation and eliminate the rest!

Jolly Llama Real Fruit Sorbet Squeezups - Forget the falling temperatures and falling leaves -- we just discovered these fun frozen treats! The squeezable sorbet comes in Blueberry, Raspberry, Peach, Mango, Strawberry, Acai Berry, and Banana Coconut. Each tube has 70 - 100 calories, 0 - 3g fat, 0mg sodium, 17 - 22g carbs, 3g fiber, 15 - 19g sugars, and 0 - 1g protein (PointsPlus® value 2*). We'll keep consuming these year-round... even if we have to wear parkas while we eat them. Click here to track 'em down!

Yoplait Splitz, Birthday Cake - Yogurt is good, but not as good as cake. (You know we're right.) So when this cake-flavored, low-fat yogurt hit the shelves we thought, "UPGRADE!" Each 3.25-oz. container has 100 calories, 1g fat, 60mg sodium, 18g carbs, 0g fiber, 13g sugars, and 3g protein (PointsPlus® value 2*). And yes -- there are sprinkles!

Coffee Talk! From Sips to Nuts...

We love to chat about java! Here's some of the latest dish on our favorite brew...

I'd Like a Tall Pike Place Roast... at Home! Beginning next month, Starbucks' most popular roasts will be available in K-Cups and sold at grocery stores, for your at-home brewing convenience. Nice! Now if only there were a K-Cup capable of churning out a Light Frap...

Pistachios: The New Coffee Bean? A study published in Food Chemistry indicates that a caffeine-free drink that tastes and smells like coffee could be produced by roasting Pistacia terebinthus, a tree fruit akin to pistachios! From the sound of it, the technique hasn't been perfected, but there's hope out there for decaf-sippers of the world who are craving something different. Nutty! (Side note: HOW cute is Stach, the mascot for Everybody's Nuts!?)

Dunkin' Donuts: Good News, Bad News! We're really happy that DD is planning a big expansion farther west... but it stops at New Mexico. (The HG HQ is in California.) COME ON! We're also delighted to hear that the company's tasty coffee is being packaged in K-Cups... but the home-brewing pods are only available at Dunkin' Donuts locations, not supermarkets nationwide. Luckily, we've spied the K-Cups for sale over on Amazon. Woohoo!

What's New in the World of Coffee?

Season's Eatings!

Guilt-Free Fall Finds... Perfect for Halloween Snacking!

We're still a bit worried that this is something we dreamed up, but we tasted it with our own faces, so we know it's real. ACT II Mini Bags Candy Corn Flavor Popcorn are individual bags of microwave popcorn that tastes like candy corn, with only about 150 calories and 5 grams of fat per bag. Impressive! And these cuties make us smile. Peeps Chocolate Dipped Orange Marshmallow Chicks are standard Peep-shaped chickies, but their bottoms are dunked in chocolate. PAR-TAY! Each one has about 55 calories and 1.5 grams of fat. If you need a more nutritious seasonal snack, look no further. Kashi TLC Cranberry Walnut Fruit & Grain Bars have that cranberry zing along with plenty of that Kashi wholesome goodness. Each bar has 120 calories, 3 grams of fat, and 4 grams of fiber. Weeee! Last but not least, Dreyer's/Edy's Limited Edition holiday flavors are here! Peppermint and Pumpkin flavors have hit the ice cream section of the freezer aisle (separately -- not as one disgusting super-flavor). The Slow Churned Light line (our go-to ice cream) has versions of these seasonal varieties with 90 - 110 calories and 1.5 - 3.5 grams of fat per 1/2 cup. But there are also Fun Flavors versions that have only 110 - 120 calories and 3.5 - 4 grams of fat per 1/2 cup. So either way, it's A-OKAY!

The Buzz...

If you haven't yet heard about new Dr Pepper Ten, there are two things you need to know: 1) It's a ten-calories-per-cup soda made with a bit of caloric sweetener in addition to the no-calorie stuff, and 2) the tagline is "It's Not for Women." Uh... Really, guys? While we understand the tactic of marketing a low-cal soda to the dudes of the world, just TRY to keep us from sampling it. Or perhaps that was part of the master plan... ***Need a few cues during the day to help keep you on track with your weight-management goals? A recent study tested the effectiveness of sending daily text messages to dieters with customized tips, reminders about logging food and exercise, and other forms of encouragement. The group that received the messages lost more weight than the groups that did not -- 2COOL! ***Sure, your food is good... But is it SUPER? Scientists have whipped up a so-called super-spaghetti. What's super about it? The pasta is made with barley flour, which could reduce the risk of heart disease. And it can fly. (What? It can if you throw it or bring it on a plane.) ***While a new survey suggests that half of all Americans feel they're doing all they can in terms of eating healthy, two-thirds of adults in the U.S. are overweight or obese. Are we just fooling ourselves? Click here to read more from the American Dietetic Association's Nutrition and You: Trends 2011 report. ***Where in the world is Hungry Girl? She might be in YOUR TOWN... if you live in the Philadelphia area! Lisa Lillien (HG herself) will be signing books, slinging free snacks, answering questions, and having fun with HG fans tonight (Monday, 10/17) at 5 p.m. at the Wegmans in Cherry Hill, NJ. Click here for more info, and click here for the deets on MORE upcoming book-tour events! And that's all we've got. HG out!

CHEW ON THIS:

Happy October 17th, Four Prunes Day! One source we found (a North Carolina newspaper from 1986) indicates that this holiday originated in 1824, when boarding house keepers could only afford to feed boarders four prunes for breakfast. Others claim that four is the minimum number of prunes one should eat in order to achieve... um, the desired effect of eating prunes. Hmmm...
