NEWS

Spotted on Shelves...

Dreyer's/Edy's Slow Churned Light Ice Cream, Girl Scouts Cookie Flavors - Those Girl Scouts and their cookies are everywhere you turn. And luckily for us, they're back in the freezer aisle (the cookies, not the Scouts) in reduced-fat fashion. Grab a tub of the Slow Churned light ice cream in Thin Mint or Samoas. Each 1/2-cup serving has 120 calories, 3 - 4.5g fat, 50 - 55mg sodium, 19g carbs, 0g fiber, 13 - 14g sugars, and 3g protein (PointsPlus® value 3*). These are only available through April, so get 'em now!

Kashi Steam Meals - Because steaming is the hot trend (no pun intended) in the world of frozen meals, our pals at Kashi have gotten in the game. (Trays are SO 2010.) The all-natural, single-serving bags o' lunch or dinner come in Spinach and Artichoke Pasta, Chicken Fettuccine, Roasted Garlic Chicken Farfalle, and Sesame Chicken. Each entrée has 270 - 300 calories, 7 - 9g fat, 450 - 630mg sodium, 38 - 42g carbs, 4 - 8g fiber, 0 - 8g sugars, and 13 - 17g protein (PointsPlus® value 7 - 8*). Grab these from the freezer section STAT.

Fiber One Chocolate Caramel & Pretzel 90 Calorie Chewy Bars - The folks at F1 are getting hip to the sweet-and-salty trend! Now you can sink your teeth into a low-calorie, fiber-ific snack that's a whole new flavor sensation for your taste buds. Can you go wrong with chocolate and caramel? NOPE! Each 90-calorie bar has 2g fat, 90mg sodium, 17g carbs, 5g fiber, 5g sugars, and <1g protein (PointsPlus® value 2*). Scan the snack aisle for these the next time you're at the store...

Food & Health Trends We're Loving...

A couple of companies recently announced new developments that deserve major applause, so excuse us while we clap with our words... The hotel group behind Holiday Inn is launching a new chain called EVEN Hotels. What makes the EVEN concept so special? The hotels will focus on addressing wellness needs -- exercise, healthy food, work efficiency, and (the often-neglected) rest. The rooms are set up for in-room workouts (the coat rack doubles as a pull-up bar!), and the hotel gym offers group exercise activities; the meals are nutritious, natural, and fresh; and it doesn't hurt that the prototype looks GORGEOUS. The first hotel is expected to open next year. We'll want to visit... and never leave. Over in the food world, Panera Bread is stepping up in another way. After a year of testing out three pay-what-you-can Panera Cares Cafes, the chain is reportedly planning to open MORE of the suggested-donation-only establishments. On average, the original locations broke even, with about 20 percent of patrons giving more, 20 percent giving less (or nothing), and 60 percent giving the suggested cost of their choices. Looking out for other people ROCKS, and so does Panera. (P.S. Plan ahead with Panera's Nutrition Calculator!)

HOORAY for Positive Changes!

Guilt-Free Dessert? Piece of Cake! (Or Cookie.)

Portion-Controlled Cookies and Cake? Sweet!

Craving sugary desserts? Snag some of the latest single-serving items on the market...

Quaker Soft Baked Oatmeal Cookies and Crunchy Oat Granola Cookies - Surely Quaker has been making oatmeal cookies forever, right? Nope -- in their own words, it only took them 130 years, but now they have them. And best of all, they're portion-controlled, so you probably won't inhale too many at once. The large, individually wrapped Soft Baked options each have 170 - 180 calories and 6 - 8g fat (PointsPlus® value 4 - 5*). Crunch-masters can chomp on a four-pack of the smaller, crispier treats for 160 - 170 calories and 6 - 7g fat (PointsPlus® value 4*). The crunchy Mixed Nuts variety is extra-tasty!

Sara Lee Pound Cake Slices - Maybe Zen masters can handle themselves around a whole pound cake but, frankly, we cannot. So when we heard about these individually wrapped slices of cake, we freaked. They come frozen and are ready to eat after thawing (or a quick nuke in the microwave). Did we mention they come in Original AND Double Chocolate, and that each slice has a reasonable 160 - 180 calories and 5 - 7g fat (PointsPlus® value 4 - 5*)? Excuse us -- we have a date with our freezer...

The Buzz...

Raise your hand if you love Dr. Oz! (FYI, ALL hands are up over here.) Lisa (a.k.a. HG) is going to be back on the popular doc's show ONE WEEK FROM TODAY (Monday, 3/19)! Tune in to The Dr. Oz Show for a VERY Hungry Girl episode! Lisa will be dishing out secrets to super-sized guilt-free eats, sweets, and treats and showing off ALL-NEW recipes. She'll even walk people through the making of a classic HG recipe in the kitchen. Click for show times! ***Label news: The USDA is officially requiring that nutrition labels be slapped on packages of all ground and chopped meat and poultry; plus, stats for 40 popular cuts of raw poultry and meat must be displayed on packages or nearby. Way to help take some of the guesswork out of eating right, government peeps! ***Jonesing for a midday pick-me-up? Through this Wednesday (3/14) at Starbucks, you can get a half-price hot or iced espresso beverage after 2 p.m. when you present a receipt for an espresso drink bought before 11 a.m. that same day. We suggest a Tall Iced Skinny Flavored Latte -- just 60 calories! ***Sometimes, all of the nutrition numbers being thrown at you can be a bit overwhelming -- we get it. A new study shows that certain types of nutrition info posted on fast-food menu boards are just plain confusing to customers. One example is when a calorie range is given with no explanation of why; another is when the nutrition info provided is for an entire multi-serving meal item. If you find yourself faced with vague numbers, ask an employee if more information is available -- many places have separate pamphlets on hand. ***Super-useful Twitter news: The USDA is launching state-specific Twitter feeds to alert consumers about food recalls and other helpful food-safety info. Click here to find your state's handle. And if you wanna follow HG on Twitter, Lisa's handle is @HungryGirl. And that's all we've got. HG out!
