ASK HUNGRY GIRL
I know you try a bazillion products each month, but which do you eat regularly? What's in your fridge and pantry right now? Has anything new made it into your rotation? I've gotta know!
Inquisitive in Irving
Yup, you're inquisitive! Here are the answers to all your Qs... One of my favorite breakfasts is an egg scramble in a mug, so I always keep Egg Beaters and wedges of Laughing Cow Light cheese in my fridge. And a recent favorite morning meal is hot oat bran. It's old-fashioned, for sure, but so easy to make and really filling. I also like to start the day with a special drink I make with FRS Low Cal Orange Concentrate.
As for lunch and dinner staples, my fridge is usually packed with bags of broccoli cole slaw, which is basically just pre-washed shredded broccoli along with some other veggie shreds. I like to toss it with diced apple (Fuji), Newman's Own Lite Low Fat Sesame Ginger Dressing, and pouched albacore tuna (packed in water) or chunks of chicken breast. Something else that goes great with broccoli cole slaw? Amy's Organic Chunky Tomato Bisque! I just stir-fry 'em together so the soup coats the veggies like a sauce. Then I season it up and sprinkle it with some reduced-fat Parmesan-style grated topping. It's a great pasta swap!
Other stuff I usually have on hand these days? Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Breeze, VitaTops, spaghetti squash, grapes, oranges, sugar snap peas, sliced turkey breast, Corazonas Oatmeal Squares, jerky, Mini Babybel Light cheese, and light string cheese.
Now you've got the inside scoop (and perhaps some new snack and meal ideas). Enjoy!
Hiya Hungry Girl,
I've gotten great ideas from you for salad dressings and dressing alternatives. Now I need ideas for the salads themselves! Any unique ideas to help me mix it up a bit?
Shake Up My Salad
Hi Shake Up,
It's great to change things up with your salad routine so you don't get bored. And I've got lots of ideas!
Think Outside the... Lettuce - Try fresh veggies other than lettuce, spinach, and the usual suspects. I love grape tomatoes, chopped jicama, and scallions. Fresh fruit -- like chopped apples, blueberries, and grapes -- is great too.
Choose Convenient and Flavor-Packed Add-Ins - Canned and jarred fruits and veggies are fantastic for salads. Try mandarin orange segments (in juice), pouched sun-dried tomatoes (or packed in oil, then drained and rinsed), roasted red peppers (packed in water), sliced beets, hearts of palm, corn, artichoke hearts (packed in water), and sliced water chestnuts... just not all in one salad!
Play with Protein - Get creative with the protein you add to your salad. Grilled chicken is always great, but also try pouched seasoned tuna (StarKist Tuna Creations rock!), cut-up veggie burgers, canned beans like chickpeas or black beans (rinse 'em), and imitation crab.
Crunch It Up - Crunchy stuff ROCKS -- but not the greasy, fried items that typically top off restaurant salads. Instead, try some Fiber One Original (the slightly sweet cereal twigs are great on Chinese chicken salads), All Natural Almond Accents (don't overdo it there!), and crushed-up baked tortilla chips. You can even crush up some unexpected chips, like Barbeque Popchips for a Southwestern-style salad. YUM!!!
